Beyond the trans/cis binary: introducing new terms will enrich gender research We need terms such as ‘gender modality’ that are flexible enough to capture the nuances of human experience but pragmatic enough to serve science, argue three scholars of bioethics and sexual health.. “How people identify shapes not only their experiences of marginalization, but also their bodies — be it by influencing their smoking habits, whether they exercise, what they eat or whether they undergo hormone therapy or transition-related surgeries,” they explain. Including more than binary categories where appropriate can enhance studies’ validity, sharpen research questions and help scientists to think about what they are really trying to capture, the trio says. #Gender #Research #Academia #Health

“Gender is an expression and a spectrum.” Gender dysphoria is the feeling of discomfort or distress that might occur in people whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth or sex-related physical characteristics. For Ayaan, (assigned female at birth but identifies as male, Ayaan uses he/him pronouns), the onset and occurrence of menstruation increased his dysphoria by 10 fold. He shares his experience navigating menstruation, gender and identity. Pride month may have come to an end, but the work on gender, sexuality and identity must continue. As ecosystems engaging with these intersections, it is critical to create and enable communities that support transpersons to come forward, share their experiences thereby facilitating more intentional and intersectional actions. If you would like to discuss this further, connect with the Research team at Baala at info@projectbaala.com A note for our readers: If you choose to share this post, please be mindful and use appropriate language and the pronouns Ayaan chooses to use. #menstruation #gender #health #trans #india #projectbaala Ayaan Krishan Varma (He/Him) Ankita Gupta ( Ph.D.)

It's International Asexual Awareness Day! While accurate representation is difficult for many in the rainbow, asexual people not only contend with erasure and misinformation but also some uniquely intersectional issues woven into their gender identity. Consider the expectations of sex and sexual identity imposed on cisgender men and cisgender women alone; or how allosexual gender roles emphasize virility and libido. Now consider the complexity of these issues for trans and nonbinary people, who are frequently sexualized and fetishized by a society that would rather objectify them, than accept them. Demographic Fact: The 2020 Ace Community Survey Summary Report found that of their 15,132 respondents: 61.2% identified as women or female, 22.5% as nonbinary, 15% were questioning or unsure, 14.6% identified as men or male, 12.3% as agender, 8% as genderqueer, 6.6% as genderfluid, 5.5% as demigirl, 5.4% as no gender, 4.7% as androgynous, 2.2% as demiguy, 1.2% as neutrois, and 1% as bigender. #Asexual #Asexuality #AsexualAwareness #AsexualAwarenessDay #Ace #AroAce #Aromantic #Nonbinary #Trans #GenderQueer #Genderfluid #Aroacespec #AcePride #Asexualproblems #Asexualityisreal

Gender dysphoria is a complex diagnosis with a controversial and sociopolitical history that cannot be ignored. It’s also a very recent concept that should not overshadow the full scope of gender diversity throughout the ages, or around the world. In retrospect, the diagnostic labels imposed on trans people reflect a biased attempt to measure or pathologize what cisgender people didn’t understand. Yes, gender-diverse individuals experience unique forms of stress that are worth discussing, yet to do so effectively requires stripping away a lot of misunderstanding. To fully grasp the scope of gender dysphoria as an evolving framework, the past century can be broken down into five distinct waves: The Psychoanalytic Wave, The Transmedical Wave, the Transdiagnostic Wave, the Holistic Wave, and the Identity Wave. #LGBTQMentalHealth #TransLivesMatter #GenderDysphoria #QueerCounselor #LGBTQ+ #Nonbinary #Genderqueer #Genderfluid #LGBTQPsychology #AffirmativeTherapy #LGBTHistory https://ow.ly/b7Ey50Px7is
