The government has pledged significant funding to combat tax fraud with hundreds of new HMRC investigators set to be appointed. However, with the number of investigations into serious tax fraud at a record low, questions are being raised about HMRC’s ability to deal with the most complex cases. In a recent Law360 article, David Sleight comments: "Offshore avoidance and evasion cases are notoriously difficult to investigate and enforce. It is inevitably going to take some time for new officers to get up to speed and to be sufficiently competent to undertake these complex investigations."
