Could Military Service Transform Rehabilitation in the UK? The UK faces critical challenges in its criminal justice system: overcrowded prisons, rising gang activity, and high reoffending rates. Traditional incarceration methods often fail to rehabilitate offenders. In our latest article, Solomon Fazel explores the bold idea of offering non-violent offenders the chance to serve in the military as an alternative sentence. Drawing on historical examples and modern lessons, this approach could reduce reoffending, ease prison overcrowding, and address recruitment shortages. This proposal isn’t without challenges, but with rigorous criteria and ethical oversight, it could offer a transformative solution for both offenders and society. In his maiden speech, Lord James Timpson, Labour’s Prisons Minister, emphasized that prisons should create better citizens, not better criminals. At Unilink, we fully support this vision. Our innovative solutions, like the Custodial Management System and AIM, are designed to rehabilitate offenders, reduce self-harm, and empower inmates. These technologies help maintain family connections and foster responsibility, aiding reintegration into society. We share Lord Timpson’s commitment to transforming the prison system and are eager to contribute to this mission. Together, we can make prisons a place of positive change. Feeling proud! 💪🙂📣. Idesco readers have been securing Finnish prisons for 30 years. Why? 👉 “Idesco readers are very reliable. There are no faults in them”, says specialist Ari Pakarinen from Finland’s Prison and Probation Service. All readers in Finnish prisons are from Idesco, all together thousands of them. Some readers have been serving where they were first installed for 25 years, but during renovations older reader versions have been replaced by new ones, such that all the newest prisons now use the latest encryption technologies. Correctional sites are a very special access control environment. Controlled access ensures safety for both inmates and prison staff. 🗞️ Prison overcrowding is in the news again - Here's how NDTG is making a difference! NDTG is addressing the issue of prison overcrowding with a community-focused solution. 🏗️ Across prisons in the UK, NDTG is delivering CCDO Demolition Courses to ex-offenders. This initiative helps tackle overcrowding by preparing people for meaningful employment post-release within the demolition industry, reducing reoffending rates and helping them reintegrate into society. 🎓 Those who pass the final exam earn a CCDO Demolition Labourer Card and are qualified to work on demolition sites for up to five years, easing the transition back into the workforce. 🤝 Supported by partnerships with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Ministry of Justice UK, our initiative aims to create real opportunities for ex-offenders across the country and in turn reduce strain on prisons. Here we see individuals at HMP Glenochil who have recently completed a course with NDTG trainer Brian Carroll MIDE. 🏴 A first for Scottish prisons! Scottish Prison Service This initiative is a win-win for tackling issues like employment and prison overcrowding but also the demolition industry's skills crisis – the need for 200,000 skilled workers. The 20th Antigone report, presented in Rome on April 22nd, sheds light on the concerning state of Italian prisons. As the prison population swells, so do rates of suicide, signaling a troubling trend in the penitentiary system. Antigone President @Patrizio Gonnella emphasizes the urgency of prioritizing this issue on the political agenda to address the myriad challenges it presents. The report paints a stark picture of overcrowded prisons and escalating suicide rates, underscoring the pressing need for reform. Based on extensive monitoring of 99 prisons across Italy in 2023, the situation is simply tragic. Coinciding with the report's release, the arrest and incarceration of 13 prison guards at Milan's Cesare Beccaria juvenile detention center highlight ongoing issues also within the juvenile justice system. of mistreatment and torture within the system. Referred to by adolescents as the "Beccaria system," guards have been alleged for maltreatment and torture against children. While Cesare Beccaria's-philosopher and jurist-legacy is rooted in advocating against torture and the death penalty, recent legislative changes signal a regression in Italy's approach to juvenile justice. Reduced thresholds for pre-trial detention, advanced from the far right government, raise concerns about disproportionate punishment for minor offenses, contradicting efforts to promote rehabilitation and reintegration. Critics argue that punitive measures overlook the underlying causes of juvenile delinquency and fail to address the needs of at-risk youth. The prevailing punitive mindset perpetuates cycles of abuse and discrimination, undermining efforts to support children's development and prevent future criminal behavior. Furthermore, a lack of comprehensive data on violence against children underscores the need for greater attention to this issue within Italian society. https://lnkd.in/emUYqaxz #juvenilejustice #italy

WOW! "PLAN FOR CHANGE" Quote: ... Under its new prisons strategy called "Plan for Change", the UK government will build four new prisons over the next seven years, creating 6,400 new places. My Comment: even if 6,400 places over SEVEN YEARS is achieved, that is just a drop in the ocean! "Plan For Change" is yet another patronising and simplistic slogan from UK Gov & Associates. They like these catchy three word strap-lines because that's what those 'clever' marketing men wearing grey suits and designer stubble use to convince consumers (aka tax-payers) to buy whatever they are promoting. Even this latest plan (and there is no no guarantee it will be achieved) to create more places will not be sufficient to incarcerate the ever growing number of serious offenders which is boosted even further by hoards of uninvited migrants descending on Britain in dinghies. What value does any government provide to our Nation - answers please!

Are Prisons Obsolete by Dr. Angela Davis - Download "The question of whether the prison has become an obsolete institution has become especially urgent in light of the fact that more than two million people (out of a world total of nine million) now inhabit U.S. prisons, jails, youth facilities, and immigrant detention centers. Are we willing to relegate ever larger numbers of people from racially oppressed communities to an isolated existence marked by authoritarian regimes, violence, disease, and technologies of seclusion that produce severe mental instability? According to a recent study, there may be twice as many people suffering from mental illness who are in jails and prisons than there are in all psychiatric hospitals in the United States combined" https://lnkd.in/e7cKcynD #Abolition #Prisons #Prison #CriminalJustice #RacialJustice #Justice #SocialJustice #Autism #MentalIllness #Disability #Immigration #Incarceration #MentalHealth

🗞 Our comment in Big Issue last week: "In prisons across the country overcrowding and understaffing means people are locked in their cells for up to 22 hours a day. What hope do people have of coming out of regimes like this rehabilitated and ready to turn their lives around? We urgently need to address the prisons overcrowding crisis and the early release scheme is one sensible way of doing this. However, we must ensure that the people released have long-term, stable housing and the right support to come out to. We cannot simply release people from prison into homelessness, trapping them in an endless cycle of cell, street, repeat.” https://lnkd.in/eMSqff2Y #prisonpopulation #overcrowding #prison #justice #justicesystem #criminaljustice #custody #reoffending #CellStreetRepeat #probation #rehabilitation #prisonsupport #resettlement #homelessness #earlyrelease

Today CCJ’s Veterans Justice Commission released a brief chronicling the nation’s evolving approach to providing targeted healthcare to incarcerated military veterans. The report was produced by the late Evan Seamone, who spent 20 years in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps and was an adviser to the Commission. Healing on the Inside: A History of Healthcare for Incarcerated Veterans begins just after World War 1, as a wave of service members returned from Europe with distressing symptoms, ranging from fatigue and tremors to confusion, nightmares, and impaired sight and hearing. These symptoms became known as “shell shock,” and they seemed connected to criminal behavior. As state surveys found a substantial share of incarcerated veterans with service-related conditions, the Veterans Bureau (the predecessor to the VA) developed plans to provide targeted treatment within correctional facilities. But as a federal agency, the bureau was unable to compel participation by state prison wardens, and limited resources created other impediments to progress. The result was a patchwork system enabling incarcerated veterans in some states to receive care designed to address their unique service-related physical and mental health needs, while others did not. Discover the rest of the story – along with opportunities for future progress – in this fascinating report: https://lnkd.in/eE_z9y5C

"The government is dealing with a prison system in crisis," I told the Thomson Reuters journalist recently. "But it is vital that prisoners have access to digital resources and are able to develop digital skills, which will better prepare them for life when they are released." If we don't prepare people for when they leave prison, they are very likely to reoffend, and the crisis will continue. In an increasingly digital age, we must ensure inmates have digital skills. However, as the article correctly states, "many prisons were built in the Victorian era, and the digital age has passed them by." Currently, prisoners aren't permitted to use the internet for security reasons, and as the article states, installing broadband infrastructure in the country's prisons would cost approximately 100 million pounds. But Coracle's system doesn't require broadband in cells. Coracle laptops are secure and offline, but still provide prisoners with a dashboard of interactive learning materials that help them develop skills and prepare for life outside. We currently have 2,750 laptops in 90 prisons in England and Wales - our service doesn't require expensive infrastructure and with device license costs being under £35 a month, I ask you this: As a taxpayer, would you like to see more Coracle laptops in prisons? https://lnkd.in/eXDDBEEV
