Unfortunately class is nearly ALWAYS left out of the equality, diversity and inclusion conversation. This is extremely frustrating and we need to do a lot better and view social mobility in the ways we do with other vitally important protected characteristics. How can you have a thriving entrepreneurship ecosystem with only those from wealthy backgrounds?
“Where you grew up, went to school and your parents’ occupation, sadly, makes a difference. Working-class entrepreneurs can’t ask family members for seed funding or loans. Investors will miss out if they fail to see that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not.” It was a pleasure to contribute to this important article about the economic and social barriers facing entrepreneurs from lower socio-economic backgrounds. It’s vital that business leaders of all backgrounds are given the support they need to realise their potential. (Article is behind a paywall - register to view.) https://lnkd.in/eWyEzACy

Inequality can’t be solved in school. ⚖️ This article resonated with me MASSIVELY. While I’ve dedicated my career to making education more equitable, the stark reality is that even if students are supported to “get the grades” they deserve, that won’t be enough. Despite having what I’d personally consider a “successful” career, with many achievements I’m hugely proud of, I’ve definitely faced many of the issues discussed in this article, such as: - Overt accent/class bias in the form of being turned down for a role I had already done (with a great track record in it to boot) with the feedback that I “lacked gravitas” 👀 - Not having the financial stability to ever take risks (not having a job has been one of my biggest fears since a ridiculously young age) 💰 - Not having the “social capital” to live somewhere rent free (particularly near London where the majority of opportunities still unfortunately exist)/have the connections needed to start my own venture 👥 While there has been a lot of focus (and funding) on levelling the playing field for young people/schools, there is still a huge gap post-school, which is not only preventing individuals from reaching their full potential, but it’s also preventing valuable contributions to the economy. Social mobility benefits everyone! 👏 #socialmobility #levellingtheplayingfield #classgap #inequality

When we worked in finance, yhangry 👨🍳 was a side hustle. This hack helped us find our first 5 super users 📈 Heinin Zhang and I started having dinners for our friends, peers and their friends... From these initimate dinners, we got SO much valuable feedback! - about our product - about who we can partner with - and started the flywheel of word of mouth Over time, we have hosted these dinners for: - connecting with other female founders - connecting with other marketplace founders - connecting with people from our community! If you are building a business or own a community, Here is a little incentive to meet a few of them IRL, And let the magic unfold! 🎁 👉 Link to view dinner parties currently happening in comments :) I’d love your help to spread the word 💗- tag a entrepreneur/ content creator you know would love to engage with their community :) #community #founders #startups #corporateevents #banking #hiring #entrepreneurship #brandmarketing #ycombinator

Excellent article. Although by no means a silver bullet, we need to do more as a country to provide young people with #appliedlearning entrepreneurship opportunities in similar ways to how #workexperience is provided. Entrepreneurship needs more profile as a viable career, with opportunities provided for young people to give it a go safely and families given a chance to see young people build confidence and skills through opportunities like Young Enterprise UK and others provide. If we’re serious about promoting entrepreneurship in this country we have to start earlier in raising awareness of what’s possible (including making available no credit, under 18 business bank accounts so young people don’t have to trade using personal accounts) and access to #financialeducation could make a big contribution to helping young people be more prepared to consider starting a business.

The FTC's decision to outlaw noncompete agreements marks a significant milestone! Hey, fellow business owners, what's your take on this development? Comment below! From my perspective, this policy shift grants everyone the freedom to pursue their ambitions without legal constraints—igniting a wave of innovation and growth. 🌟 Wannapreneurs can take charge of their careers. We're looking at a potential surge in startups which brings a healthier, competitive boost for the entire business ecosystem. 📈 Remember, while noncompetes are out, NDAs (which I highly recommend) remain in play, ensuring the protection of proprietary information. Personally, I've always encouraged my team to explore entrepreneurial ventures—just with the caveat of respecting client relationships. It's a fair balance for all parties involved. #BusinessGrowth #Entrepreneurship #NoncompeteBan
