Embracing online accessibility could be a game-changer for all Globally, with an estimated 1.3 billion people having a disability, becoming more accessible has started to become a priority for companies in 2024. Not only is it the moral thing to do, but it also gives companies better access to consumers who have a similar spending power to the non-disabled population. Mike Adams OBE, renowned disability leader, CEO of the influential disability organisation @Purple, and founder of EnableAll, addressed in a recent article by HRNews - portal dla HR i o HR ‘Why Accessibility MUST Be a Priority for Industries to Unlock an Underserved Market in 2024’ that industries need to focus more on their accessibility plans. A survey conducted by Oak Tree Mobility in the UK reported a quarter of people with disability avoided public transport. Adams notes that with inaccessible systems that restrict movement or have you rushing from the ticket gate to your seat, creates an environment full of unpleasantries. With the incorporation of online travel booking for trains, buses, trams, etc, it could be a game changer for PWD. But it's not just accessibility to transport that Adams highlights in his article. With gaming being a constant escape from reality, it’s no wonder that companies like Xbox and Sony playstation are making strides with the Adaptive Controller and Access Controller. But gaming needs to go beyond having inclusive controllers, PWD may be deterred if they’re not considered in game design or hardware. Inclusion needs to be incorporated from start to finish to really ensure PWD are being included. The same can be said for the beauty and fashion industry. In recent times products have become more accessible through adaptive packaging and designs that empower PWD. However, it still fails to incorporate accessible shopping experiences. Consumer websites need to be inclusive and accessible, whether it’s alt text for pictures or simplified checkout processes. Online accessibility doesn’t just start with the consumer. It starts from the top. It’s PWD having a seat at the table and saying, “Hey, I think this is a really good idea.” It’s PWD being part of the development stage, guiding the advertising processes and everything else in between. When companies start to incorporate this, watch how they grow and progress as they become recognised by PWD. #Accessibility #Inclusion #EnableAll #DigitalInclusion #CustomerExperience #PWD

Yesterday, the White House published a proclamation celebrating the 34th anniversary of the ADA, which was signed July 26, 1990. The proclamation celebrates the day and promotes the progress that has been made under the current administration. Here's an excerpt about digital accessibility: "Everyone in America should be able to share in the benefits of technology. That is why my Administration has taken action to ensure that we are improving our digital infrastructure for people with disabilities. The Department of Justice issued standards for State and local governments to make their web content and mobile apps more accessible to Americans with disabilities so they can more easily access local government services, emergency services, voting information, and publicly funded education. And my Administration is working to make online health services and applications for jobs in the Federal Government more accessible." 👏 👏 #a11y #digitala11y #StillMoreWorkToDo #DigitalInclusion #accessibility
