Here is an interesting photo from a site we maintain in Kent. During the storm last week, a 46-year-old 68-feet tall Red Oak (Quercus rubra) was completed uprooted. Luckly nothing was significantly damaged, but this is a prime example of the importance of soil scarification when installing a new landscape. Scarified/de-compacted soil at the time of planting would have allowed the tree to develop deeper roots. Choosing the right landscape installation partner makes a huge difference in the long-term development of your landscape, and that is why we ensure all of our employees are trained on not only how to do something, but also why it is done. #KirklandLandscapes #ElevateYourLandscape #TreesAreTheAnswer #StormCleanup

MNL, along with project partners City of Brainerd and WSB Engineering, began work on a restoration project for the City of Brainerd in fall of 2023. This project was near the local high school and adjacent to the Mississippi River. The goals of the project were to stabilize the riverbank to halt erosion and provide critical aquatic habitat. Rivers and streams are under threat all across the United States and restoring them requires a lot of thoughtful bioengineering. MNL selected the right materials to ensure a successful restoration. Locally sourced toewood was used instead of riprap to stabilize the banks and create natural habitat for fish and other aquatic creatures. Boulder clusters were carefully placed in key locations to simulate a natural streambank formation and restore the natural flow of the channel, further reducing erosion. Finally, after the riverbank had been reformed, native seeds and live plants were installed to further enhance the site's ability to support wildlife and create healthy root systems that also serve to control erosion. Projects such as these highlight just how MNL shows integrity and craftsmanship in everything we do. We don't take shortcuts or use materials that are cheaper just to save on cost. We don't source seeds or plants from unknown or exotic sources because we understand the importance of native plants and their ability to produce food and habitat for wildlife as well as grow deep roots that enhance and stabilize soil. That's why cities like Brainerd, MN choose MNL when they take on a project like this riverbank restoration. We've been restoring riverbanks, just like this Mississippi River project, for over 25 years and we're not slowing down. We are on a mission to Heal the Earth! #HealtheEarth #EcologicalRestoration #NativePlants #Habitat #GreenSolutions #NatureBasedSolutions #Biodiversity https://lnkd.in/g6v7A8FV

Part 2 Changes happening in real time. This mega infrastructure project is working as designed, and results are taking shape at a faster pace. The Everglades Underground Seepage Wall is working. The moisture and water is staying within the park area. The area outside the wall is drying up fast. This area was considered wetlands, or moist lands by several agencies, that control area. Some canals are bone dry. #realestate #localrealestate #land #usa #miami #enviornment #everglades @evergladesnps @miamidadecounty #derm #wetlands #seepagewall #changingflora #grasses #invasives #invasivespecies

Ready to add some greenery to your landscape? Remember, it's not just about planting any tree—it's about planting the right tree in the right place. 🌳🌲 Trees can help lower your heating and cooling costs by providing natural shading. Aim for trees on the east and west sides of your home to maximize shade in summer, while avoiding the south side to preserve winter sunlight. However – be sure to consider overhead and underground utility lines when planning. Keep trees at least 25 feet from overhead powerlines and 10 feet from underground lines to prevent outages. Choose smaller tree species near utility lines to maintain reliable service. Before digging, always check the location of underground utility lines by calling MO 811 or visiting missouri-811.org. It’s a free, simple process that ensures a safe and hassle-free planting process.

Is it possible to create, manage and maintain a native based British woodland and use for it commercial timber? I think it is. Over a number of years I’ve used several native timber producing mixes. The mixes are based on the NVC woodland types, but tailored to suit the needs of timber production. I’ve also used the same principals with mixed non-native species. A favourite native mix is Birch and Oak, also Ash and Oak, but Ash-dieback put pay to that so now I use Sycamore (non-native) and Oak. Other conifer broadleaf mixes that are favourites are Beech and Douglas fir (non-native) and Scots pine and birch. Several mixes might be used on one site, soil dependant. Additionally, I like to add some native (non-timber) producing trees and shrubs for ecological and landscape reasons.
