⚓ In collaboration with an Iranian seafarer public channel with over 6k members, we conducted a poll. The first question asked, “Which factor has the most significant impact on Iranian seafarers’ stress, anxiety, and depression?” The majority of participants, at 44%, cited “isolation from family.” The second question inquired, “Which factor has the most significant impact on improving Iranian seafarers’ wellbeing and mental health?” The majority of participants, at 58%, mentioned “establishing effective support and responsive mechanisms in companies.” According to studies conducted by Marine Benefits, a non-caring company culture is the primary issue that seafarers are struggling with. Today, on World Mental Health Day, we reaffirm our commitment to the mental well-being of our seafaring community and our colleagues, supporting UN SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. Mental health is a vital component of overall health, and although life at sea is normally highly rewarding and fulfilling, seafarers can face unique and demanding challenges, such as isolation and loneliness to the physical demands of their work. It is therefore crucial to prioritise their well-being. We are dedicated to raising mental health awareness and providing meaningful support to improve the lives of those in the maritime industry. In partnership with the Norwegian Training Center (NTC) in Manila, we offer the “Mental Health for Seafarers” course, equipping seafarers with tools to identify, address, and prevent mental health challenges. A healthy, well-supported workforce ensures smooth operations, reduces incidents, and maintains a productive supply chain. By investing in mental health, we improve lives and contribute to a more sustainable maritime industry. 🌊 Seafarer Mental Health: Navigating the Hidden Currents 🌊 The life of a seafarer is filled with challenges that many of us onshore may never fully understand. Long periods away from loved ones, isolation, loneliness, and the pressures of demanding work can silently take a toll on their mental well-being. Yet, mental health issues among seafarers often remain unspoken—viewed as a silent storm. 🚢 The Digital Disconnect: One growing concern is the over-reliance on the internet as a form of escape. While connecting with family or friends online can provide comfort, many seafarers find themselves isolating further, consumed by social media, feeling disconnected from their crewmates, and comparing their lives to the seemingly perfect lives they see on their screens. 🛠️ We can start with small Changes: Encourage "offline" connection. Creating opportunities for social interaction on board—whether through team activities, communal meals, or hobby-sharing sessions—can foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie among the crew. Just as important as internet access is the ability to maintain human-to-human connections in the present moment. We must remember that mental health is just as critical as physical safety for those who keep the world’s trade moving. Mental health is taking center stage in 2024. From increased awareness about burnout to destigmatizing therapy, the conversation around mental well-being is evolving rapidly. At Air Liquide #caring about employees' well-being means providing tools to help and these are just two examples: 📍 The survey “Hello, How are you?”, launched during the pandemic, led to the extension of the Mental Health Ambassadors Community, already existing in the UK since 2018, to provide support to co-workers. A group of employees belonging to different sites and countries are available to listen without judgment and provide support. All of them received Mental Health First Aid training, provided by Mental Health First Aid International who are experts on this topic. And they are also promoting good practices to prevent burnout, such as Mindful practices or learning how to Establish Boundaries, between professional and personal life. 📍 In Italy, Air Liquide implemented a very transversal program that goes beyond mental health. The Employee Assistance Program provides support in areas as different as psychology, legal, financial and social areas, but there is more. Physical well-being is also essential so they implement advantageous access to fitness and nutrition plans. How do you prioritize your mental health and general well-being?
