🍽️ September is US National Food Safety Education Month. According to the World Health Organization, unsafe food is responsible for an estimated 600 million cases of foodborne illnesses and 420,000 deaths worldwide each year. The worst part about these statistics is that foodborne illness is 100% preventable. ASI, a member of the Kiwa group, works to prevent this from happening every day as a food safety Certification Body, but there are several ways that anyone can get involved and raise awareness, no matter where they fall along the food supply chain: ✅ Expand your food safety knowledge through webinars and training sessions ✅ Donate to support future food safety professionals ✅ Raise awareness by participating in campaigns like STOP3000 Discover more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/er9hJtuG #FoodSafety #FoodSafetyMonth #Kiwa #FoodFeedFarm #ASI

Spaza Shop Food Safety: A Growing Concern The recent unfortunate fatalities of five children, reportedly attributed to foodborne illness stemming from a local spaza shop, underscore a distressing reality. This incident accentuates a pivotal issue: the inadequacy of ensuring food safety standards within spaza shops, which serve as vital community resources. In an interview featured on #Newsroom Afrika (https://lnkd.in/dX6xNsTm), Mthokozisi Nkosi (PCQI) of ASC Public Health and Food Safety Consultants South Africa provides valuable insights on this matter. Here are key focal points to contemplate: Enhanced Regulatory Framework and Enforcement: Well-defined regulations on food storage, handling, and expiration dates specific to spaza shops are urgently needed. Robust enforcement mechanisms are imperative to ensure adherence. Education and Training: Adequate training in food safety protocols is essential for spaza shop proprietors and staff. This encompasses aspects such as proper hygiene, storage temperature control, and identification of spoilage indicators. Community Awareness: It is pivotal to disseminate knowledge among residents regarding prudent food purchasing practices. Vigilance in checking expiration dates, comprehension of appropriate storage methods, and prompt reporting of concerns constitute crucial measures. Collective efforts are imperative to forestall the recurrence of such tragedies. We implore policymakers, industry stakeholders, and community entities to engage in a collaborative, multi-faceted approach to upholding food safety standards in spaza shops. What can be done? - Disseminate this communication to heighten awareness. 🔒 - Participate in dialogues concerning the reinforcement of food safety regulations. 📚 - Extend support to organisations championing food safety training for spaza shops. 📣 Together, we can foster a safer milieu for our communities. #FoodSafety #ASCPublicHealthandFoodSafetyinterview

A very comprehensive publication compiled by the world bank group (2018) addresses key aspects of food safety hazards as they continue to be a global public health challenge and prevention recommendations. The outbreaks we see in our country is testament to the gaps identified in many food safety publications including this one. Policies, regulations or guidelines are as good as non-existent if more energy is not focused at implementation. Below is a summary of 10 key points summarizing the "Safe Food Imperative: Accelerating Progress in Low- and Middle-Income Countries" report: 1. Food Safety Importance: Emphasizes the critical need for robust food safety systems to protect public health and support economic development in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). 2. Global Burden: Highlights the significant health and economic burden of foodborne illnesses, which disproportionately affects LMICs. 3. Systemic Weaknesses: Identifies key weaknesses in food safety systems, including inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, and insufficient regulatory frameworks. 4. Economic Impact: Details the economic costs associated with foodborne diseases, including healthcare expenses, lost productivity, and trade barriers. 5. Policy and Regulation: Calls for stronger food safety policies and regulatory frameworks to improve food quality and safety standards. 6. Capacity Building: Stresses the need for capacity building in food safety management, including training for inspectors and improvement in laboratory services. 7. Public Awareness: Underlines the importance of raising public awareness and education about food safety practices among consumers and food handlers. 8. Collaboration and Partnerships: Encourages increased collaboration between governments, international organizations, private sector, and civil society to enhance food safety systems. 9. Investment in Technology: Advocates for investment in modern technologies and infrastructure to improve food safety monitoring and control systems. 10. Data and Research: Highlights the need for better data collection and research to inform policy decisions and track progress in food safety improvements. This summary provides an overview of the key themes and recommendations aimed at advancing food safety in LMICs. The document is publicly available The World Bank . Until we systematically and robustly implement and address these recommendations, food safety outbreaks will continue to increase and lives sadly will be lost. We all have a part to play but this doesn’t undermine the fact that responsible individuals should be held accountable. Where there is a challenge, a solution also exists. #safefoodforall #foodsafetyfirst #globalsustainablegoals

Lessons from the Multinational Listeriosis Outbreak: A Call for Global Collaboration in Food Safety The worldwide listeriosis outbreak that occurred between 2015 and 2018 and was connected to frozen veggies served as a sobering reminder of the hazards and complexity that come with our world's food supply chain. This outbreak, which spread to Australia and many European nations, demonstrated how crucial it is for nations to work together and use cutting-edge tracking tools to protect public health. Investigation Insights: The source was identified as frozen vegetable products from a single supplier thanks to the coordinated efforts of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), and state food safety agencies. This accomplishment demonstrated how crucial whole-genome sequencing is to the detection and management of foodborne diseases. A Call to Action: Every link in the food supply chain has to have strict control procedures and strong "farm-to-fork" traceability systems, as demonstrated by this case study. As experts in food safety, it is our responsibility to promote and carry out advancements in food processing and to cultivate an environment that values ongoing education and adaptability to new threats to food safety. Additional Learning: I advise going to reputable websites like the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) if you want to learn more about food safety and stay up to date on the most recent findings and outbreaks. These portals provide priceless information and updates on laws pertaining to food safety, epidemic investigations, and preventative actions. In an era where our food systems are more interconnected than ever, let's leverage this incident as a catalyst for strengthening international cooperation and enhancing food safety standards worldwide. #FoodSafety #GlobalSupplyChain #PublicHealth #ListeriosisOutbreak #InternationalCollaboration Websites for Further Learning: World Health Organization (WHO) Food Safety: https://lnkd.in/djWNqysH Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Food Safety: https://lnkd.in/ddhqgENY European Food Safety Authority (EFSA): https://lnkd.in/dS35bNZu Note: Always ensure to access the latest resources and guidelines directly from these authoritative websites to stay informed about the best practices and updates in food safety.
