Last week I had the pleasure of being in New York, meeting with UNICEF colleagues from across Education & Adolescent Development sections as well as colleagues from Generation Unlimited. Now back in the UK, a few thoughts are emerging from out of #UNWeek. We have much to do to achieve #SDG4 especially around mitigating the digital divide, we need to move forward from learning to earning, taking into account a living wage and ensuring sustainable and decent wages into the pockets of young people to secure #SDG8. The opportunity (and indeed obligation) to shape a better world #ForEveryChild is on all of us. I was also very privileged to attend several #UNWeek side events: ✍ A high-level dialogue between key stakeholders and adolescent refugees, showcasing good practices and how to strengthen and scale them up. 💻 The official launch of the UNICEF Generation Unlimited report ‘Time to Act: Preparing Youth for Work in an AI-Powered World’. With input from 50,000 young people in 184 countries and more than 30 organizations, the report highlights the transformative potential of GenAI in skilling and employment. 🤝 Panel discussion on transformative partnerships and the power of collective action for children globally. At UNICEF, partnerships with the private sector are instrumental in ensuring that UNICEF teams can reach even more young people with concrete, sustainable results. 🌍 A fantastic youth panel discussion featuring young climate actors from all over the world each facing unique climate challenges, sharing their experiences in the climate space and the support they - and their fellow young activists - need from institutions to drive meaningful change. As we continue to celebrate #African Youth Day, it is imperative to take stock of the statistical overview of youth representation and reflect on how the world can leverage on this numerical strength and achieve sustainable development. #Africa has the youngest population in the world, with a staggering 70% of sub-Saharan Africa under the age of 30. To put that into perspective, within the age bracket of 15-35, there are over 400 million young people. This demographic dividend presents a tremendous opportunity for #economic growth, #innovation, and social #development. In its wisdom and recognising the pivotal role that youths play in transforming the socio-economic fabric of the society, the African Union developed an African Union Youth Charter(2006) which protects young people's rights and promotes their participation in society. Unequestionably, even the Youth Decade Plan of Action focuses on key areas such as #education, #employment, #governance, #health, and #agriculture. Ultimately, in the wake of deteriorating global peace and security, gender inequalities , and indeed in the face of #climate change, as youths, we are being challenged to actively participate in all spheres of human life as one way of contributing to the restoration of world order through #resilient peace and security infrastructures. By investing in its youth, the #world can unlock its full potential and achieve sustainable development as championed by the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The 10 hot topics that were covered in the African Youth Survey 2022 were relevant to the time & in subjects that specifically have impact on the African continent and on Africa's youth. Launched in 2020 by the Ichikowitz Family Foundation, the African Youth Survey and the topics covered within provide governments, the private sector & civil society with insights into the aspirations, motivations and viewpoints of Africa’s youth. Some of the topics chosen, remain relevant for each bi-annual survey whereas others are replaced by more current ones. This year sees the launch of the 2024 African Youth Survey - a new survey of Africa's youth with another new set of topics. "What is very clear to me is the incredible value of a tool like this; the issues that were predicted in the inaugural survey had occurred by the time the researchers ventured out for the second time. I believe the African Youth Survey truly is a crystal ball into the next five years. I have no doubt that this can become one of the most critically important development tools for the continent." The Prime Minister Youth Program and UNICEF have forged a $20 million partnership to empower Pakistan's youth. Dubbed the Generation On Limited project, it aims to unleash the potential of the country's young population. Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and UNICEF Representative Abdullah Fadil were among the key figures present at the unveiling. The collaboration targets disadvantaged youth, including young women and those not in education, employment, or training. Through initiatives like the Public-Private Youth Partnership, it seeks to bridge the gap between education, skill development, and employment opportunities. Chairman Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan highlighted the alignment between the Prime Minister Youth Program and UNICEF, emphasizing their shared vision of comprehensive support for Pakistani youth. The $20 million investment will fund various programs under the Generation Unlimited project. It aims to engage diverse stakeholders from the private sector, public institutions, and international financial institutions to amplify youth representation and participation.
