I recently had the opportunity to chat with an amazing and influential woman in business Annie Gibbins. Annie's passion for showcasing women's remarkable work and impact is truly inspirational. Our conversation highlighted some critical issues and opportunities in the realm of gender equality in STEM. Just to give you some stats: The FG Women’s Economic Equality Taskforce (WEET) estimates that the cost of gender inequality to the Australian economy is a staggering $128 billion (Source: https://lnkd.in/g9kDrntW). The number of births in 2023 was the lowest since 2006 (Source: https://lnkd.in/grunGb_q). When women are not supported in work, this is the result, and continuing in this path is not sustainable to compete globally. When we think about areas of innovation and new job creation—renewable energy, AI, cybersecurity, robotics—these are all STEM sectors. We have an ambitious target to hit almost 100% renewables by 2035 and net zero by 2040. While we complain of skilled labour shortages, we have a solution to that imminent problem: Women. Despite making up 36% of university STEM enrollments, women still struggle to find skilled STEM employment, with just 15% of STEM roles occupied by women. In this interview, Annie Gibbins and I discussed eliminating the access barriers for women to participate in STEM employment.
