Harnessing the wartime spirit #FutureForwarding When the world was plunged into war in 1939, Eskort faced a new set of challenges. Staff members enlisted, and procuring spares and materials became an uphill battle. Then an extraordinary order came in: a million tins of sausages for Allied troops. This meant investing in extra canning machinery and pushing the boundaries of our capabilities. In 1941, we expanded further, building two smokehouses to supply more than 12 tonnes of bacon weekly to convoys calling at Durban harbour. Demand soared and production had to rise to the occasion. It was a period of extraordinary endurance and innovation. Fast forward to today, and Eskort still thrives on the same resilient spirit. We’ve weathered storms, learned from our history, and emerged stronger. We’re not just about sausages anymore (although those Gold Standard pork sausages remain a hit). We’re about making a positive impact on our environment, with our two supplier-owned vulture restaurants that are sustaining a threatened species, and communities, through our commitment to keeping small towns alive. And of course, we remain determined to bring consumers the finest proudly South African, world-class, antibiotic-free products. They’re as good for you today as they were for the soldiers who won a world war.

Uhhhhhhhhhh what? Why are we putting bandaids on the fact our military family isn’t paid enough? As a veteran and spouse, I am tired of seeing these programs. They don’t address the root causes of food and housing insecurity in the military but they are constantly touted as the solution. Why are we not holding our leaders and representatives accountable? The DOD has the largest budget in the entire government but our military personal are facing food insecurity? Where is the money going? Why are we not fighting to increase our military pay? Why are we allowing our leaders to push our problems onto private organizations to fix when our leaders need to be the ones fixing the problem? As much as I appreciate the hard work, let’s stop putting energy into temporary half measures that don’t actually address our current problems. The big picture is that many military personnel are living paycheck to paycheck wondering how they will get out of debt, how they will find a better opportunity, an how they or their spouses will take up the burden of supplementing thier income. Again these programs do not solve the issues our military personnel face daily yet they are touted by many as the solution. #paynotprograms #payourtroops

At NIOSC, we’re not just hosting events—we’re reshaping what it means to bring military spouses together. Last week, we stepped outside the box and organized something totally new: a Japanese food vending machine tour! If you’ve ever been to Japan, you know the vending machines here are next level. Forget candy bars and soda—these machines offer everything from frozen gyozas to horse meat, and they’re an attraction all on their own. It was amazing to see how excited everyone was to explore something so unique and different! This event wasn’t just about having fun (though we definitely did!)—it was about moving towards a more inclusive future for spouse groups. With so many traditional spouse clubs on the island, my goal is to create a club with events that everyone can enjoy, no matter their gender, their spouse’s rank, or branch of service. My favorite part? Watching how well-received this new idea was by the group! I wasn’t sure how many would be excited about something so accessible, but everyone loved it. Shout out to our board members who planned the route and did the initial legwork to make this a reality. We’re stepping into new territory with fresh, innovative ideas that bring everyone together. It’s exciting to think about what we can accomplish when we break away from tradition and start thinking inclusively. How do you see spouse groups evolving to be more inclusive in the future?
