Our team at Genesis Research Group examined 200 systematic literature reviews (SLRs) and non-systematic literature reviews (nSLRs) to understand consistency in methods used to conduct and report on these review types. The research highlights a notable gap in the field, pointing out that these tools are not fully utilized, leading to limited adherence to recommended modelling practices. We are pleased to share our latest paper, "Bayesian Meta-Analysis of Health State Utility Values: A Tutorial with Practical Application in Heart Failure," published in #PharmacoEconomics. https://lnkd.in/deaFXJ7Z This tutorial is designed to support researchers in generating robust pooled estimates of health state utility values to inform economic evaluations. Specifically, this work shows the applicability of #Bayesian #meta-analysis for pooling health state utility values through an illustrative example among patients with heart failure.   Using data from a systematic review encompassing 21 studies and ready-to-use codes and scripts, this study provides a step-by-step guide for conducting Bayesian meta-analysis using #R. The tutorial adheres to the structured workflow as follows:   - Setting up the data - Imputing missing standard deviations - Defining the priors - Fitting the model - Diagnosing model convergence - Interpreting results - Performing sensitivity analyses   We showed that the pooled utility value for #HeartFailure was 0.66 with a 95% credible interval of [0.60, 0.70] which was consistent across a series of scenarios according to the imputation of missing standard deviations.   This tutorial aimed to foster interest in Bayesian methods and their application to bridge the gap in estimating health state utility values for economic evaluations and policy decisions. We encourage the adoption of Bayesian meta-analysis in synthesising utility values, as it offers a principled means to integrate prior knowledge and handle heterogeneity, leading to intuitive probabilistic interpretations that are critical in decision making.   Robert Grant Chris Carswell

In the evolving field of health economics, the Value of Information (VOI) methodology is important for guiding research prioritization and trial design. Unlike traditional approaches, VOI analyses provide a quantifiable measure of the potential economic value derived from reducing uncertainty through additional research. This method has been gaining traction due to its promise in ensuring research resources are allocated to areas where they can make the most significant impact. However, transitioning VOI from theory to practice is not without its challenges. A recent study sheds light on critical differences between the VOI approach and conventional clinical trial designs, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive decision context in research planning. Key Takeaways for Decision Makers: Value for Money: VOI identifies economically valuable research avenues, ensuring investments in clinical trials yield tangible benefits. Design Differences: Traditional clinical trial designs focus on safety and efficacy, while VOI prioritizes economic value and decision-making under uncertainty. Inclusion of Comparators: A pivotal finding is the necessity of incorporating all feasible comparators in the health economic model during both the design and analysis phases of research. Failure to do so can result in inaccurate trial designs and misleading treatment recommendations. The study presents hypothetical examples demonstrating the pitfalls of excluding comparators from the decision model. This omission can not only skew trial outcomes but also lead to suboptimal allocation of scarce research resources. As we move forward, embracing VOI's comprehensive approach in trial design will be crucial for maximizing research impact. This involves meticulous planning to include all possible interventions for a health condition under investigation, ensuring that research designs are both economically and clinically relevant.
