Evaluating the large decline over the weekend, driven by unfavourable macroeconomic news involving the JPY-USD carry trade, geopolitical tensions stirred up in the Middle East, and the news regarding large players in the industry liquidating funds, we observe a significant liquidation cascade, which drove #Bitcoin to a low of approximately $48,200. Following this extreme sell-off, we analysed the net impact on aggregate open interest amongst the top exchanges. As of this morning, we observed the largest decline in daily open interest since 17th August 2023, with aggregate open interest (OI) declining by roughly -17.35%, from approximately $85bn to $70.2bn within 24hrs. Notably, Binance, Bybit and Bitget were amongst the most impacted exchanges, seeing their OI drop by -19.18%, -20.49% and -21.58% respectively. In particular, this event highlights once again the significant open interest build up we saw, and the similar behaviour of derivatives traders across three of the top exchanges.
