According to studies from organizations like the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a significant majority of individuals with substance use disorders started using drugs or alcohol during adolescence. Some sources estimate that as many as 90% of people who develop substance use disorders began using substances before the age of 18. Adolescence is a critical period for brain development, and early substance use can increase the risk of addiction later in life. #recovery #prevention #addiction #sober #soberlife #sobriety #bhamrecovery #Birmingham #APC #endaddictionbham

Breaking the Stigma: Understanding Alcohol Addiction Alcohol is everywhere—social events, celebrations, and even as a stress reliever after a hard day. But what happens when it becomes more than just a drink? Understanding the neural circuitry of addiction helps us see that alcohol dependency isn’t a failure of willpower—it’s a powerful cycle that rewires the brain. Withdrawal isn’t “just toughing it out.” It’s a serious, life-threatening process that often requires medical support. And yet, we stigmatised those struggling, ignoring the immense toll alcohol takes on individuals, families, and our healthcare system—from liver disease to accidents, violence, and beyond. Alcohol is the most harmful drug, not because it's illegal, but because of its widespread use and devastating consequences. This powerful video explains how addiction forms, why it's so hard to quit, and why compassion—not judgment—is the key to addressing it. Let’s break the stigma. Watch, learn, and share to create a world where people feel supported to seek help without shame. #AddictionAwareness #AlcoholUseDisorder #EndTheStigma https://lnkd.in/gmxay3ge

Brilliant book by Dr David Fawcett highlighting a common issue in clinical practice. David Fawcett writes: “I have had countless clients come to me who have gone through well-known and otherwise exceptional drug addiction treatment programs that never addressed co-occurring behavioural addictions- most notably sex and porn addiction” I couldn’t agree with this more!! We need to be doing more to raise awareness and education on how to treat these co-occurring addictions- especially in residential treatment centres. #sexaddiction #drugaddiction #addictiontreatment
