Having experienced this duality in healthcare firsthand - as many South Africans could attest to - solutions like this will be more than welcome. As we continue to make technological advancements, essential services such as healthcare [and education] should not be left behind. Interestingly, another article I read recently mentions the increasing pressure on the ISP sector to offer zero-rated data access to essential healthcare services, especially via mobile devices as - according to ICASA - more than 90% of the population owns a mobile device. That's a staggering 57.68 Million people! With the right mindset and proper legislation in place, we could make South Africa's healthcare infrastructure akin to that of its former world-renowned status. #NHI #DigitalHealth
🔍 We just came across this insightful report highlighting the dual healthcare system in SA and the push for equity and accessibility through the National Health Insurance (NHI) platform. “𝑆𝐴 ℎ𝑎𝑠 𝑎 𝑑𝑢𝑎𝑙 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑡ℎ𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚, 𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑛𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑒. 𝑁𝐻𝐼 𝑎𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑠 𝑎 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚 𝑤ℎ𝑖𝑐ℎ 𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑠 𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑡ℎ𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑧𝑒𝑛𝑠." It is exactly this dual healthcare system that DigiMedi Health aims to service by generating resources that offer meaningful connections between the healthcare data in the public and private sectors. Armed with this information, medical professionals can make insight-driven decisions during diagnoses ultimately leading to higher-quality care. This health information system based on EHR is set to benefit both sectors equally as the platform rolls out. While the NHI tackles healthcare quality and availability, we tackle the continuity of patients' health care information across facilities, platforms, and sectors. #HealthcareEquity #NHI #SouthAfricaHealthcare

Health care is a broad topic but there is one constant across the industry: we are all striving to improve outcomes and experiences for patients. I recently had the privilege of speaking at two different conferences where, while the topics and audiences varied, both aimed to get at the heart of how to serve health insurance members better and what the future holds. At the Sagility Healthcare Summit, I joined a panel to discuss adopting innovative strategies to improve patient outcomes. With new trends rapidly emerging in health care, leveraging new technologies is vital to delivering better care and enhancing member experience. During the recent AMCP (Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy) Conference, I joined other managed care executives to discuss leading our organizations and the future of managed care pharmacy. I am inspired by the potential new technologies have to make a difference in people’s lives. By embracing innovation, we can create member-centric care that empowers and supports all members.

Too early to draw conclusions and this study is somewhat limited in scope of services and geography, but nonetheless a possible indicator on the impact of price transparency requirements in place since 2021. . .or maybe just market dynamics. ▪A review of more than 390,000 rates health systems negotiated with insurers for 37 common services in the 10 biggest U.S. metro areas shows some lowering prices with top-tier rates (above the 75th percentile) declining by 6.3% annually. Additional context: Although hospitals have been required to post their insurer-negotiated rates for common health services online since 2021, compliance with the requirements has been slow. Private health insurance on average pays hospital 2.5x Medicare according to a recent RAND report. #pricetransparency #competition
Transparency rules may even out hospital prices

The movement towards Universal Health Coverage under the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme highlights the pressing need to bridge existing gaps and dismantle silos between the private and public health sectors. Currently, the system is dualistic and fragmented. Effective integration of these two segments is crucial for achieving equitable and universal access to healthcare services. Without a doubt, this requires fostering collaborative practices, aligning healthcare standards, and implementing interoperable health information systems. I believe by working together, South Africa can ensure a smoother transition towards the NHI, ultimately improving outcomes across all demographics and making comprehensive healthcare a reality for everyone. Since this is a mammoth task, let's take one step at a time.
