💡 Balancing UX and Business Goals: The Key to Sustainable Product Success
In product design, it’s a constant balancing act: how do we create a great user experience without losing sight of the business goals that drive growth? I’ve learned that focusing on UX and business objectives isn’t an “either/or”, it’s a “both/and” that ultimately benefits users and the company. Here are a few principles I’ve relied on to strike this balance:
1️⃣ User Needs Come First, Business Needs Follow
• By starting with the user and their pain points, we ensure our designs are addressing real needs. But I also make sure every user solution ties back to a business goal. At Mercury, for example, we designed workflows that reduced support calls by making information transparent and accessible to users, which helped us and our customers save time.
2️⃣ Measure What Matters (for Users and the Business)
• Data is invaluable for finding the sweet spot between UX and business goals. At Angi we used A/B testing and feedback loops to track both user satisfaction and KPIs like conversion rates, ensuring our changes were driving impact on both fronts.
3️⃣ Small Wins Create Big Results
• Not every design solution has to be a massive overhaul. Sometimes a simple UX improvement can drive significant business outcomes. At Privy, incremental changes to the dashboard drove a 30% increase in free-to-paid conversions, showing that even small adjustments can make a difference.
4️⃣ Build Feedback Loops for Long-Term Success
• User experience isn’t static, and neither are business needs. By creating continuous feedback loops, and establishing customer advisory boards like we did at Privy, we can stay agile and iterate quickly, ensuring that our designs evolve as both user expectations and business objectives shift.
✨ The Result? A Product That Thrives
Balancing UX and business goals leads to a product that resonates with users and performs well in the market. This approach has helped me build products that create value for both the user and the business, allowing us to achieve sustainable growth.
