Wingtip Wednesday … A different angle. Question: Why is the Captain doing the walk around? Let me share with you why. The walk around gives my job "scale". It reminds me of where I came from and how far. It is the first step and opportunity for me to interface with the aircraft, at a primal level. It also gives me another opportunity to meet other members of the team. The Crew Chief, the ramp crew, occasionally the AMTs, the aircraft re-fuelers. All vitally important members of our team. It earns credibility with the other flight deck crew members. Whether it’s one First Officer or three. "The Captain is doing the walk around", rain or shine and they appreciate it. As I come onboard, I’ll check in with the Purser and Flight Attendants to make sure that they have everything they need to perform their duties and brief them on the details of our flight together. But the most important reason that I do the walk around, it is a sign of respect & trust. I respect my First Officers and trust them in preparing the flight deck and navigation / performance systems for our trip to a far away destination. We have procedures, flows and checklist to verify all is correct before we depart. But I’ve established that trust going forward. That’s why I’m doing the walk around. Zero fatalities in scheduled commercial flights in 2023 in the Pan-American region is an important result of collaboration among the ICAO South American Regional Office, ICAO North American, Central American and Caribbean Regional Office, aviation regulators in the region, and the aviation sector, including industry and employee associations. By sharing information in a non-punitive environment, government and industry can identify risks and develop risk mitigation strategies. Our work is never done, but we should take a moment to recognize our contributions to this outcome and build on our accomplishments.
In 2023, more than 12,500,000 commercial flights were registered in Pan America, and we did not have any fatalities. Such an important achievement in an industry as complex as aviation does not come by chance, nor is it the result of luck. Rather, it is the product of teamwork, collaboration, data sharing, and informed decision making. At RASG-PA we are proud to dedicate our work to aviation safety, and to bring together key stakeholders to contribute and help improve the safety of the skies in our region and the world.

When I joined RASG-PA in 2010, the region was experiencing an average of 6 to 10 fatal accidents a year, that added up to hundreds of fatalities every year. This was already an important reduction from previous decades, and a really high standard compared to other industries, but we knew we could do better, and that it was not enough. With RASG-PA (States, Airlines, Manufacturers, Professional Organizations, Airports, and partners) we set a clear objective of reducing the risk of a fatality by 50% from 2010 to 2020. To accomplish this we created a clear implementation roadmap to improve our safety data collection (protect our safety information sources, change the safety culture, enable safety data sharing, etc) and to use that information to identify risks, develop safety enhancements and implement and monitor their effectiveness. This simple but effective plan, where we focused our resources on the top contributors to our accidents, WORKED! by the end of the decade we had actually achieved an 87.5% reduction! way over the 50% we hoped to achieve. We actually had the first 0 fatalities in the LATAM-CAR region in 2014, and repeated it on 2017 and 2019. And now this became then new standard: 0 fatalities Congratulations to all the amazing people who work in the aviation industry in the Pan-American region that make this possible. Keep it up, and remember that the risks we identified and worked on will always be there! And they will come back if we forget why those safety improvements where put in place, why we do what we do, the way we do it! All the training, procedures, policies, resources and programs that are there keep us safe, be aware of cost cutting practices and "new ways" of doing things that diminish your safety standards.

Linesman (n.) Definition: A legendary creature of the port, known for their uncanny ability to wield mooring lines with the grace of a ballerina and the strength of a sailor on a mission. Often spotted darting about on quays and lurking near mooring dolphins, ready to pounce on any vessel in need of guidance. Characteristics: - Punctuality is their middle name - they arrive before the ship does, as if they have a sixth sense for impending arrivals. - Possesses a magnetic personality that attracts even the most aloof captains and pilots, who find themselves inexplicably drawn to their ever-helpful demeanor. - Has earned a reputation for being unable to utter the word "no" - a tragic flaw that often finds them entangled in a web of endless tasks and favors for the ship's crew. Usage: "Beware the linesman, for once you ask for their help, you may find yourself roped into a dance of endless requests and unbreakable mooring lines. Last week, in Gaeta, our 26th “Ship and Shore Staff Seminar” took place, hosted at ITS Academy G. Caboto. It was an important moment of sharing between our #shore and #onboard staff. The Technical, Marine, IT, Operations, and HSQE departments, alongside external speakers from NorthStandard, Dräger, Lloyd's Register, Weathernews Inc., and C.I.R.M., actively participated with a series of engaging presentations. Strategic topics addressed during the meetings included #safety culture, new navigation practices, #analysis of onboard #incidents, route optimization for safety and #efficiency, technical and #digital innovation, medical #assistance, and alternative #fuels. Our Fleet Director, Salvatore d'Amico, opened the seminar by highlighting the remarkable results achieved by the Group, made possible through targeted investments and a continuous commitment to innovation. A key focus of his speech was #mentalhealth onboard, an essential element for enhancing crew safety and well-being: 🎙️"Every individual must take responsibility for safety, but we also need leadership capable of instilling a safety culture with greater engagement and participation. Respect must flow in all directions, from the top down and towards those just starting their careers. On all our ships, there is zero tolerance for bullying." Additionally, the next steps for improving the efficiency of our fleet were announced: 🎙️"We need to exercise greater caution during all operations, whether manoeuvres or maintenance, and we must have the courage to say 'no' when safety is at risk." The gala evening celebrated the 20th anniversary of the “Ship and Shore Staff Seminar.” During the event, Carlos Balestra di Mottola, Lorenzo d'Amico, and Salvatore presented awards to the captains and chief engineers who have reached 10 and 20 years of service, expressing gratitude for their #dedication and professionalism. Additionally, two vessels were honored with the “Best Vessel Award,” a recognition given to d’Amico Group vessels that achieved the highest level of compliance across a set of KPIs throughout the year, setting an example for all other vessels. This event represents a pivotal moment to strengthen our collective commitment to #innovation, #sustainability, and #growth.
