I read a disturbing stat about youth mental health the other day (trigger warning, this post contains content about suicide) 7% - 8% of US adolescents attempt suicide each year. I actually don't know what to even say about this tbh. It's bloody shocking. It makes me really sad, worried and angry all at the same time. One in twelve young people are trying to kill themselves every year! And suicide is now the second leading cause of death among young people. We HAVE to do something about this. Like, we can't just read that stat and say, "oh jaysus that's awful" and move on with our lives. I wanted to do something myself, so I spent the last couple of weeks doing a deep-dive into our youth mental health crisis. I wanted to know what's causing it and what we need to do to solve it. 𝐓𝐋𝐃𝐑 𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨: 1. Conduct way more research to understand what's causing this problem (we currently don't know enough) 2. Improve socieconomic conditions for young people and decrease inequality 3. Tackle child mistreatment 4. Encourage protective behaviours in children; specifically good sleep, exercise, nutrition and positive social connections 5. Sort out our own s**t so we can be better parents 6. Continue education and stigma reduction 7. Reduce phone and social media usage 8. Give young people alternative (less harmful) ways to satisfy their core needs 9. Deliver more innovative, tailored, scalable ways to treat young people and improve their mental health outcomes If you want to learn more about this topic, I'll put the link to my full deep-dive in the comments. It is Mental Health Awareness Week: Noone is invincible, especially healthcare professionals! In my published study which I led across 7 countries when redeployed to Intensive Care as part of Covid 19 response, we found: “The proportion of respondents who screened positive on the three scales across the countries was 16-49% for depression, 60-86% for insomnia and 17-35% for post-traumatic stress disorder. The authors also identified an increase in the scores with longer time spent in personal protective equipment, female gender, advancing age and redeployed status.” https://lnkd.in/edP-JhB3 Lets be kind and speak up against the stigma associated with mental health. #mentalhealthawarenessweek #healthymind #bekind #healthcareworkers #nhs Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Mind Mental Health Foundation Professor Ahmed Hankir MBChB MRCPsych Alex King

🚨 "This Is Not Free Will": Addressing the Youth Mental Health Crisis 🚨 Prince Harry’s powerful words at the Clinton Global Initiative have shed light on a growing epidemic among today’s youth: anxiety, depression, and social isolation fueled by harmful online experiences💔✨ 📱🔄The Addiction Trap: Social media platforms are designed to create dependency. Young people are caught in a cycle of “mindless, endless, numbing scrolling,” unable to break free from the constant feed of information. 🚫"This Is Not Free Will": Harry’s words remind us that the youth are being manipulated by these platforms. They’re not making free choices but are instead driven by an algorithm that feeds them harmful content. It’s time we question the impact this is having on their mental health. 🌐💪A Generation in Crisis: The result? Rising levels of anxiety, depression, and social isolation among our youth, leave them vulnerable and disconnected. We must act now to provide them with the tools to navigate cyberspace safely. 🚫Content Concerns: Young minds are often exposed to harmful content, leading to serious mental health challenges. This is not just a matter of choice it’s about their well-being! Parents and educators need to help children develop healthy online habits and resilience🌱💪 👉 Book your discovery call with Dr. Abhishek Pasari today to gain expert insights on fostering mental wellness in children: www.drabhishekpasari.com #YouthMentalHealth #DigitalWellbeing #SocialMediaImpact #ParentingSupport #MentalHealthAwareness #DrAbhishekPasari #MyShishu #ClintonGlobalInitiative

💙 Today is Parent Mental Health Day 💙 The recently published CSJ report – Change The Prescription highlights some alarming trends: 📉 1 in 5 adults in England has been diagnosed with a mental health condition. 📈 There’s been a 70% rise in people accessing mental health services in the last 8 years—now nearly 2 million. 💊 Almost 1 in 5 adults takes antidepressants. 🧠 Among children aged 8-16, 1 in 5 has a probable mental health disorder, up from 12.5% in 2017. If trends continue, this could rise to 1 in 4 by 2030. This crisis doesn’t exist in isolation. Children mirror adult behaviours—if parents are struggling with their own screen habits and mental health, their children are likely feeling the effects too. 💙 This Parent Mental Health Day, we’re highlighting the work of @stem4org, who provide vital tools and resources for families. This year’s #ScreenSmartParenting theme encourages parents to prioritise their own mental health while guiding their children through the digital world. 🌍📱 By setting healthy screen habits, you can reduce stress, model positive behaviours, and build stronger family connections—both online and offline. 🔗 Find expert-led tools & resources at www.stem4.org.uk #PMHD #MentalHealthMatters #ParentMentalHealthDay #childrenmentalhealthmatters #ScreenTimeForKids #screentime

New data from AXA Health shows that 2 million young people have self-diagnosed mental health conditions, with many turning to social media for medical advice. This is aligned with our research with Oliver Wyman Forum, which found that while Gen Z are more proactive about their wellbeing than any other generation, they also feel the worst. They are nearly twice as likely to struggle with mental health issues compared to older generations, and twice as likely to go to social media for their health information. To mark the start of Mental Health Awareness Week, we've published findings from our recent insight survey into mental health social care services. We recognise the importance of mental health social care in the context of statutory responsibilities of councils and their key role as partners in integrated care boards. The survey, completed by just under half of all directors of adult social services, was carried out to find out about current practices in mental health social care. It focussed on: 👉 engagement in the Community Mental Health Transformation Programme; 👉 assessment and care planning - moving on from the Care Programme Approach (CPA) 👉 arrangements for the commissioning and delivery of adult mental health services. The findings have enabled us to understand the progress and challenges faced by councils and recognise areas of good practice. It will be used to inform and shape our future support offer. New research published in the The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health journal has revealed that child mental health admissions to acute wards have risen 65% in a decade, highlighting a particular surge in girls who are self-harming. Our own anonymised data shows that volunteers for our Shout mental health text support service took 600,485 conversations with 240,331 texters in 2024. 15% of these conversations were about self-harm and 11% were with children aged 13 and under (around 25,800 children), many of whom were reaching out for support for the first time in their lives. It is clear that across the UK, children need urgent mental health support now more than ever. Services and tools supporting early intervention must be a priority to help prevent children and young people reaching crisis point. Through our services Shout and The Mix, we're scaling free, accessible mental health support to children, young people and adults across the UK, in the moment, when they need it most. Find out more about how we're working to support children and young people, and how you can partner with us on our mission here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ew3xbfSZ
