At Kokotree, we're in the process of seeking a senior engineering manager dedicated to enhancing the speed and efficiency of our content and platform. During the interview process, we encountered a candidate previously employed as a VP of Technology. This interaction brought to light a prevalent issue among less effective individuals in the field. The candidate's primary solution to performance challenges was to significantly increase spending on server resources. Rather than proposing strategies for cost optimization, their approach leaned heavily towards escalating expenditures on infrastructure and expanding the team. This perspective, which sidesteps accountability and leans towards using company funds without a focus on efficiency, emerged as a considerable concern. It's intriguing and somewhat disconcerting to observe how frequently this approach is recommended by those lacking the drive to seek more innovative and sustainable solutions.

Once, an investor told me that “relationship tech” would never be relevant. In 1930, every single person met their partner in the real world. Today, 61% of people meet the person they will spend their life with, via a screen. It’s easy to see how the insane rise of technology has impacted how relationships start, but its impact runs much deeper than that. Technology ripples all the way through how we interact with the people we love; how we stay in touch with them, how we take care of them, how we share our lives with them. Designing and building products for relationships carries with it the utmost responsibility. This space isn’t about efficiency, productivity or convenience—it’s about creating tools that amplify connection, not replace it. These solutions must honour the depth and complexity of our relationships, enhancing what it means to be close, to care, and to be seen.
