Engineering thought of the day "Driver Error - Part 1/2" I have mentioned in many of my articles published so far that leading causes of accidents on road are 1. Driver is not in a position to take a decision - Mist, Dust, Night, Fog, Rain 2. Driver is not in a condition to take a decision - drowsy, distracted, drunk 3. Driver is not in a mood to take decision - Road Rage 4. Unexpected vehicle misbehavior - sudden loss of tire pressure, fire Apart from these main causes, there is one more leading cause of the fatal accidents, this cause is also a classic example of "reasonably foreseeable misuse of the system" as mentioned in #SOTIF and that cause is "#Pedal #Misapplication" There are three primary cases which needs to be mitigated: Driver presses accelerator pedal instead of brake pedal or vice versa or he presses both pedals together (accidently). The system designed to mitigate all these situations is called Pedal Misapplication Mitigation System aka PMMS. This is one of the most difficult systems to design. I will throw some more light on how this can be done in my next article , stay tuned for more details
