𝗤: What happens when the connection between a degree program and related career paths isn’t always abundantly clear? 𝗔: This may complicate how we can communicate the value of the degree program to various groups, especially prospective students. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝘅𝗟 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻: We have recently been studying Recreation and Leisure Studies (RLS) at the University of Waterloo. Work-Learn has partnered with researchers in the RLS department to identify the unique skills RLS students gain from their degree program, and the value they take away from such a program (i.e., the program's value proposition). We are also keen to understand and identify the role of work-integrated learning (WIL) in forming the value proposition of the RLS degree. Stay tuned for more on this research by following our #WxLResearch series of LinkedIn posts! In the meantime, you might find it helpful to catch up on this recording from a recent session RLS (Dr. Karla Boluk) and WxL (David Drewery, PhD) participated in: https://lnkd.in/gsj2Kgn8 #WIL #RecAndLeisure #RLS

Being a part of NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education has truly been a wonderful experience for me. Since becoming a member of #NASPA in 2018 and getting the privilege to meet, connect with, and learn from so many great colleagues and several senior-level administrators from around the country that not only have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share, but also encountering so many senior-level administrators that look like me, has been quite transformative for my career. My experience with #NASPA has no doubt inspired me to continue my ascendancy in the academy. With that being said, I recently submitted my application for #NASPA's Ujima Institute. The #UjimaInstitute serves as a place and space for self-identified Black and African American student affairs professionals who desire to ascend to senior-level administrative positions to learn from Black and African American senior student affairs leaders who share their journeys, lessons, and advice through a cohort-based institute. Of course, I am keenly aware that there are no guarantees that I will be selected for this year's cohort. But, I must say that it was gratifying just to apply. The fact that this opportunity is even available speaks to #NASPA's continued efforts to make sure all racial/ethnic groups within the student affairs profession are not only seen and acknowledged within the organization, but are likewise able to benefit from the wealth of knowledge and experience that exists within the organization as well. In my opinion, this is #DEIB in praxis, not just theory. And even if I don't get selected this year, I will continue to apply to the #UjimaInstitute each year because I genuinely believe in what this institute represents. #UJIMA24 #NASPA #HigherEd #StudentAffairs #SAPros #Black #AfricanAmerican #Inclusion

Higher education is more than just a pathway to individual success; it’s a powerful engine driving national development. Diego Buenaño's insightful article highlights how countries can leverage higher education to align national goals and foster economic, social, and cultural growth. According to his analysis, nations that strategically integrate higher education into their national development plans (NDPs) set clear, measurable objectives and allocate resources effectively, creating opportunities for sustainable progress. Swipe through this carousel to explore how higher education can transform societies. How is your country integrating higher education into its development strategy? #Arentto #HigherEducation #InternationalRecruitment #UNESCO #Education

As an aside, I wonder a little about the assumption that Australian universities' international ranking performance directly benefits (domestic) students' undergraduate education - this seems to be implied here? Most pertinent university rankings do not measure teaching quality, and the ones that try to do so do so very superficially. Plus, we know from QUILT that universities' research intensity does not necessarily translate into student satisfaction. (Over-)emphasising rankings is a problem also I think as it may have had a detrimental influence on what has been more recently referred as the 'social licence' of universities. In fact, I fear that universities' going on constantly about their international rankings may have contributed to universities being seen as somewhat aloof in the public and political arenas. And ranking performance speaks little to the concerns of universities' local communities. Btw, the same can also be said about the emphasis on universities being a successful export industry. The reality is much more complex of course - but I still think the signalling is quite problematic potentially.
The lifetime achievement award at the The Australian Financial Review went to Professor Margaret Gardner, now Governor of Victoria but previously VC of Monash and RMIT and the first woman to hold a senior leadership role at Griffith University. A thoroughly well deserved recognition. She gave a brilliant speech in which she defended the role of universities and noted the astonishing success of Australian universities - Australians who attend universities are far more likely to go to an internationally ranked university than their peers in the UK and US. She also gave a very timely warning about too much policy tinkering nd government interference in the sector which was timely! https://lnkd.in/gua2t5BE

This 4th of July, as we gather to celebrate America's rich heritage and the vibrant democracy we cherish, let's also take a moment to recognize the extraordinary contributions of international students. These talented individuals from around the globe are not mere visitors; they are vital contributors to the U.S. national tapestry. They bring with them fresh perspectives that enrich American higher learning institutions and foster meaningful cultural exchange. As fireworks light up the sky, we are reminded of the role these students play in advancing American economic development and technological innovation. They often lead in research and breakthroughs. They contribute significantly to sectors that are crucial to the U.S. economy. They help create jobs and advance industries bu introducing diverse skills and new ideas. They ensure that the U.S. remains a leader on the global stage. However, the path for these students is fraught with challenges, particularly stringent visa requirements that allow only 90 days to secure employment post-graduation. Despite these hurdles, their impact extends well beyond university campuses. This Independence Day, let's advocate for supportive policies that create pathways for these scholars to contribute long-term to the American society. Their success is intertwined with America’s own. They fuel the collective American dream. Let's commit to extending the spirit of opportunity and inclusivity that defines America to everyone who reaches these shores, especially the international students who strive to make this country a better place. As we enjoy today's festivities, let’s engage in a conversation about how we can better support the international minds among us. Please share your thoughts and experiences on how we can collectively work to enhance international students’ journey and integration into American life. 📷 The White House is getting ready for the #4thOfJuly celebrations. #4thOfJuly #InternationalStudents #Innovation #DiversityInEducation #AmericanDream
