KPMG is a multinational professional services network, and one of the Big Four accounting organizations, along with Ernst & Young (EY), Deloitte, and PwC. KPMG is organised into the following three service lines; Audit, Advisory and Tax and Legal Services. It was a great opportunity to interact with the esteemed employees from the advisory department and the Human Resource department. Listening to the young, excellent and professional group was impactful with the following points to note; 1. Be open minded in the career market. Oftenly, many people experience a change in trajectory in the practice field. 2. Do something that will make you stand out in your applications. It may involve acquiring more qualifications such as CHRPs in the Human Resource field. 3. Acquire soft skills which enable one to navigate through the job environment. The skills include effective communication and excellent networking and negotiation skills. It was such a great and interactive session with so much to learn.

This is an event from my 20's. KPMG used to audit the Indian Cultural Center (ICC) which was under the aegis of Indian Embassy. I was posted to that audit along with my colleagues Selman P Bava and late Sabah Mursal. We did the work with complete dedication and came up with quite a lot of internal controls which could be improved. CA Rajesh N Singh - who was the treasurer at that time was happy with our work. A year down the line, CA Rajesh N Singh reached out to me asking if I could help out with the finance department of ICC. It was more a pro-bono engagement, but I did pick it up. 𝑰 𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒑𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚, 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍 𝒂𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒔 𝒘𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 6-9 𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉𝒔. 𝑰 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 2.5 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔+ 𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒔𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒅. 6 years later, when I took on start up roles in 2019, this experience of doing things bottom up, myself helped me a lot in building the right teams, right processes and getting hands dirty in messed up finance environments. I had done similar work in articleship, but post qualification in KPMG & Ooredoo, these were much bigger companies where the bigger picture mattered more. Hello Network, I have completed an insightful ‘Career Catalyst Audit’ program with KPMG where I was able to further expand my knowledge about the company. I was particularly eager to complete this program and it didn’t disappoint! It was incredibly useful to understand and learn more about what it might be like to participate on an audit team at KPMG. During this program I: • Worked on a project focusing on conducting an audit for a hypothetical client, Ashbourne Industries. • Determined the materiality of general ledger accounts to plan the audit. • Challenged myself using excel to determine the materiality of accounts within the general ledger and to track confirmations. (Excel is a skill I am intrigued in developing, this program allowed me to do so and it fascinated me, I am determined to complete more programs which allow me to further develop this very useful skill.) • Prepared, sent, and evaluated the results of confirmations sent to third parties. • Reviewed the client's order-to-cash (OTC) process. • Communicated the audit findings via a video presentation and reviewed the audit opinion, building my client communication and presentation skills in a real-world context Overall, I performed well and have managed to develop vital skills which I am eager to leverage onto any future programs and the financial sector I plan to embark in. Furthermore, doing this program confirmed that I really enjoy working in audit and of course when learning you come across weaknesses! I realised my weakness was understanding and applying my knowledge when using Excel Spreadsheets, this has encouraged me to build on this skill and learn more about it, I will also complete more job simulations that allow me to test my ability of using Excel sheets in the future. I’m particularly grateful for the opportunity which has further increased my interest in the role of an audit. I’d love to further expand my knowledge, utilising the amazing online and in person opportunities given. Update: I have received a personal commendation letter congratulating my achievement from the student success team! Describing that the quality of my work as a ‘massive achievement’ where I have ‘built the skills Accounting recruiters look for when hiring’, my work ‘stood out’ and that ‘It's clear’ that I ‘put a lot of effort into the simulation’. By my efforts being noticed this has made me feel even more driven and passionate to venture out more into the finance world and complete more Job Simulations! Thank you KPMG and forage!

15 Years. 3 Countries. 3 Cultures. People see success but no one sees the struggle. Here’s mine, condensed into key moments: 2009: Qualified ACCA and started at KPMG Pakistan. 2013: Promoted to Supervisor at KPMG Pakistan. 2016: Joined BDO Bahrain as Audit Senior. 2017: Moved to the UK with KPMG as Assistant Manager. 2021: Became Manager at Grant Thornton UK. 2024 (June): I welcomed my daughter into the world. 2024 (July): Got UK nationality. 2024 (August): I received my passport. 2024: Achieved ACCA practicing and audit license. 2024: Founded Reflex Accounting Limited. Moving into 2025 with bigger goals and plans. It took 15 years of effort across three countries. 10 years living away from my home country. Along the way, I realized something: Employment won’t deliver the life I want. I worked hard for this. I earned this. But you don’t need 15 years to learn. You can fast-track your journey by learning from mine. P.S. All this wasn't easy but life is about taking the uncomfortable path.
