The KPMG "Doing Deals in Sub-Saharan Africa 2024" report showcases the resilience of investment flows across the region, even in the face of political and economic challenges. While it provides valuable insights into capital markets, it's notable that public equity markets, such as stock exchanges, are not mentioned. This absence highlights a recurring trend where the critical role of public capital markets in driving economic growth and development is often overlooked. Key sectors like mining, energy, and technology continue to attract substantial interest, driven by SSA's rich natural resources and advancing technology landscape. The report underscores the significance of regional consolidation and strategic investments, aligning with the CMU Africa’s mission to unite Africa’s public capital markets to promote regional development. This approach is vital for long-term sustainable growth, emphasizing the importance of well-integrated, transparent public markets in Africa’s economic future. Again, stock exchanges are not mentioned. Furthermore, the report emphasizes the increasing importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations in investment strategies, which reflects a broader shift towards responsible investing. This focus resonates with CMU Africa's goal to support listed companies in communicating effectively and becoming more visible to a wider pool of investors. By doing so, they can help finance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. The absence of public equity capital markets in the report raises questions about whether sufficient attention is being given to the critical role these markets play in sustainable growth and development. What are your thoughts on the exclusion of public equity markets from this discussion? #financingafrica #capitalmarkets #cmuafrica

🌍 Our CEO, Mikir Shah, and Head of Strategy and Corporate Finance, Caroline Hilton, attended the 11th annual summit of the Africa CEO Forum last week in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali. 🎙️ Caroline remarked, 'The conference was exceptionally well organised, with every detail meticulously planned. The Kigali Convention Centre, in particular, was state-of-the-art and provided an impressive venue for the summit.' 💭 This year’s theme was “AI, Leadership, Common Market: how Africa can win its place at the table of tomorrow’s powers”, where participants discussed their experiences and the future of the continent, as well as the topics of leadership, new information and communication technologies (NICTs), economic integration, finance, and infrastructure. The agenda was influenced by external dynamics, prompting critical questions: Will African nations unite to claim a place at the global decision-making table ❓How can decision-makers align their narratives to chart a new future for Africa❓ 🗣 The event included a presidential panel with Paul Kagame of Rwanda 🇷🇼 , Filipe Jacinto NYUSI of Mozambique 🇲🇿 , and Dr. William Samoei Ruto of Kenya 🇰🇪discussing effective leadership strategies that have propelled their countries forward, including the importance of strengthening bilateral relations, investing in digital technology to improve governance practices, and introducing innovative policies. 🗣 Other panels explored Africa’s role on the global stage. Brenda Mbathi, CEO of Two Rivers International Finance & Innovation Centre SEZ, discussed how Special Economic Zones can foster economic growth and innovation, propelling Africa towards a sustainable future in global economics. 🤝 ASR is committed to supporting the African business community. It is evident that the private sector must play a central role in securing a seat at the decision making table, integrating and developing African markets, enhancing intra-African trade, and boosting the continent’s competitiveness. To achieve this and enhance resilience in the evolving business landscape, companies like ASR play a crucial role in providing insurance protection for infrastructure financing and offering risk management expertise for both small and large enterprises. 👥 Our co-reinsurance partnership model, collaborating with international and local reinsurers, boosts corporate and specialty risk mitigation for African businesses and investors. Additionally, through knowledge transfer and enhanced risk assessment (re)insurers can scale up infrastructure investments, improve connectivity within Africa, and increase intra-African trade. #Africa #ASR #CEOForum #Kigali #Rwanda #reinsurance

I'm enjoying the West African Deal Summit (WADS of money for investment in West Africa, we hope!) currently running, in Lagos. What is needed to get more catalytic investment with more impact into West Africa? Better data is a key theme across speakers, about the wider economy, customers, and the enterprises seeking investment. As an entrepreneur, I would add better/easier access to data about potential funders. A key barrier to this is potential funders' fear of information (and spam or fraud) overload if they "overshare". What could help solve this? A few thoughts: having been through due diligence in receiving earlier funding and having used that funding well; credit ratings to track financial management and performance; the credibility of key management; and of course a strong business model (and for social investors, a strong impact model). (Naturally, we tick these boxes with our liquic organic fertilizer OFA :) ) There's an irony in the frequent similarity between entrepreneurs seeking funding who are insufficiently transparent and collaborative, and funders who are the same... These tendancies both tend to reduce the effectiveness of the funding available. Hopefully WADS and other similar events will help us all chip away at this problem...... #WADS2024 #OFA #ImpactInvestingGhana #GIZ #BritishInternationalInvestment #ImpactInvestmentFoundation #GSGImpact #GhanaInvestmentSupportProgramme

Why are #PE deals shrinking in #EastAfrica? 🇰🇪 🇹🇿 🇷🇼 🇺🇬 🇧🇮 🇸🇸 🇨🇩 🇸🇴 1️⃣ Smaller Deals: Deloitte: 74% of PE firms in East Africa anticipate deals below $25M due to economic pressures. 2️⃣ Shifting Focus: Firms are targeting smaller, resilient sectors like real estate, healthcare, and e-commerce. 3️⃣ Funding Sources: Capital is expected to flow from Europe, the US, and increasingly the Middle East.
