Four years ago, Novartis launched its AI Innovation Lab — well ahead of the AI buzz that surrounds us today (this video is an old one). I take great pride in being part of a company that is at the forefront of innovation in this space. However, the main reason for sharing this video is to remind us that, despite the bling, successfully deploying even a single model on a dataset is challenging and takes time. Solutions that enhance productivity are simple. We all need to stay humble in this journey; remain active & curious practitioners; and most importantly, take care of the privacy and ethical concerns. Technology empowered by human insight will always surpass technology alone. The future is promising only if we are curious and disciplined about this new 'cheese'. Last week, I had the honor of being a panelist at the "AI Today and Tomorrow" event hosted by the Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Atlanta Tech Village. During the event Chris Hackney asked fellow Washington University in St. Louis alumni and I the thought-provoking question: "What excites and concerns you the most about the advancements of #artificialintelligence?" IMO: On one hand, the ability to make predictions based on vast amounts of data can revolutionize industries and improve our daily lives. For example, at Costnip, we're using AI to help patients predict more accurate costs of their healthcare services, before their doctor's appointment, decreasing the risk of being hit with an unexpected bill. The tool can help consumers comparison shop the same way we search for flights or for a new home to buy. #knowbeforeyougo #pricetransparency On the other hand, I also appreciate the dialogue around issues like biases, lack of regulation, and the impact on the next generation's workforce opportunities.
