Quick update on the food science and technology innovate for tomorrow challenge. Thank you very much for all the applicants, supporters, and co-sponsors UMass Amherst | Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship, UMass Dining —Applications: We received 32 applications (some are group applications), totaling about 50 students. The event capacity is 20 applications, so we need to review submissions to select the final 20. —Student Demographics: Approximately 55% are from Food Science, 15% from other CNS departments, and 30% from other colleges, including the Isenberg School of Management, College of Engineering, College of Information & Computer Sciences, and College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. About 55% are undergraduates, 40% are graduate students, and 5% are alumni. —Topics: Submitted topic categories are listed in the image below.

In our educational greenhouses, students get to go beyond textbook learning and dive into the world of STEM. From agriculture to biology, math to environmental studies, they see real-world concepts in action 🌿✨ Every step, from planting to harvest, is a lesson in problem-solving, critical thinking, and discovery. It’s not just about growing plants; it’s about nurturing future innovators.

🌍 Exploring Food Systems at the University of Oxford   Last Saturday, I joined an interdisciplinary workshop at the University of Oxford, hosted by IFSTAL - Interdisciplinary Food Systems Teaching and Learning, alongside 50 students from diverse academic/professional backgrounds.   The workshop, allowed us to deep dive into the complexities of our global food systems. Within smaller groups we: ✅ Mapped out a chosen challenge - stakeholders, mechanisms, relationships, power dynamics, consequences (it got very messy!) ✅ Discussed various solutions required to address the challenge (which always seemed too simplistic) ✅ Engaged in collaborative policy brainstorming to create actionable instruments for change   One key takeaway: Tackling food systems isn’t just about one discipline or approach. I’m greatly privileged to have been selected to partake in the Implementation Science Training Program by the University of Washington, in partnership with Makerere University, that I successfully completed. My cohort was the largest and one of the most geographically diverse the course has ever had and it was evident in the wealth of professional and personal experiences that we shared in our discussion board postings. Over the 10 weeks, we were introduced to the core implementation science theory and nine methodological approaches used in implementation science. Key takeaway: The evidence-based intervention is the “WHAT” and the implementation strategy is the “HOW”.

It’s going to make things easier down the line for myself and whoever comes in as the next PhD student." White, a PhD candidate at Florida International University, now leads a Long Term Ecological Research Network synthesis science working group exploring changes to nutrient cycles in marine ecosystems.
