We're back for some #FridayFun with another amusing construction and engineering phrase... ...have you heard of a 'grease nipple'? It's a type of fitting attached to bearings, or other mechanisms that need internal lubrication (ahem!), often in areas that are hard to reach. Within a grease nipple, there is a small ball bearing on a spring, which is compressed when lubricant is pushed through via a grease gun. This acts as a valve to allow grease through, without allowing it to double-back or leak out. Grease nipple's are found in KR Group's forklifts, diggers and cranes. Boring holes into the earth creates high stress grinding and gouging abrasion with every rotation. Early methods of protection were welding square mild steel bars onto the barrel, then hand welding hardfacing for protection. This was labor intensive and the effectiveness was questionable.
