Nepal, one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, is facing increasing threats from climate change. Major contributing factors, including deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, glacier bursts, and unplanned urbanization, are accelerating environmental degradation. https://lnkd.in/du4GdGfW

WEF Climate Action Vanishing shores: This is the impact of rising sea levels in Guinea-Bissau Oct 29, 2024 Rising sea levels in Guinea-Bissau are threatening coastal villages like Djobel, leaving them on the brink of extinction. Villagers face severe poverty as seawater ruins farmland, contaminates drinking water and destroys homes. Despite minimal greenhouse gas emissions, Guinea-Bissau’s communities are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis, highlighting the need for global climate justice. https://lnkd.in/dNRujkWi

In 2024, World Environment Day focuses on restoring land, halting desertification and building drought resilience. Up to 40 per cent of the world's land is already degraded, while an estimated 3.2 billion people worldwide are negatively impacted by desertification, and more than three-quarters of the world's population is expected to be affected by droughts by 2050. Considering the Situation, Saudi Arabia hosted the World Environment Day 2024 themed as 'Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience' under the slogan "OUR LAND OUR FUTURE ". The message is clear, we must restore ecosystems to tackle climate change, save species from extinction and secure our future. Let's work together and make our planet Earth a greener and cleaner place and inspire the youth to plant more trees, reduce waste, and stop pollution. #GenerationRestoration ☘️ #WorldEnvironmentDay #SaveEarth #SavePlanet

The Southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul has faced an unprecedented situation of catastrophe after heavy rains flooded practically every city in the state, either totally or partially. Entire cities have been destroyed, the capital, Porto Alegre, has been severely hit and, in addition to the obvious consequences of the destruction caused by the water, the cold is approaching, diseases are multiplying and problems are being caused by the difficulty of finding homes and temporary housing for thousands of people, of transporting goods and even to find clean water to drink. I spoke with Marcio Astrini, executive secretary of the Observatório do Clima [Climate Observatory] for REVOLVE on the intricate interplay between climate change, human actions, and the devastating impact on the region, emphasizing the urgent need for proactive measures to address the escalating climate risks faced not only by Rio Grande do Sul but by vulnerable regions worldwide. Vanishing shores, vanishing hope—Guinea-Bissau's coastal communities like Djobel are on the front lines of a climate crisis they did not create. Rising seas have contaminated drinking water, ruined farmlands, and forced families into a cycle of poverty. As 70-year-old Aghoti Sanhan reflects, ‘I never thought this would happen in my long life.’ For the villagers who are losing their homes and livelihoods, ‘climate justice’ is not just a phrase; it’s a lifeline. Developed nations bear a critical responsibility to act and fund the means for resilience, starting with the communities that have contributed least to the crisis but bear the heaviest impacts. The voices of Djobel are a call to the global community to deepen our commitment to climate action—not just in words, but in meaningful support for adaptation and resilience. Land restoration is in the spotlight this year 🏞️ Healthy land is at the heart of achieving climate🌡️, nature🌿 and sustainable development🐳 ambitions. As we observe #DroughtAndDesertificationDay, UNEP-WCMC’s Deputy Head of Nature-based Solutions Raquel Agra, highlights the importance of hitting restoration goals and halting degradation of ecosystems to achieve global goals #ForPeopleAndPlanet. In this blog, she writes how NbS initiatives have a significant impact in addressing land restoration ambitions to tackle drought and desertification, with examples from Portugal. Adaptive management has been used as a paradigm to respond to uncertainty about the future impacts of climate change. An essential component of adaptive management is learning through time and modifying responses to new knowledge or new technologies for a more efficient or adequate response. The flexibility to change decisions over time is vital to a successful adaptation. In Mindanao, the Manobo Indigenous People live and thrive on a vast wetland despite facing numerous storms and floods yearly. However, in recent decades, they have observed that these extreme events, such as storms, are getting stronger due to climate change. #ClimateAdaptation #ClimateChange #NatureBasedSolutions https://lnkd.in/dx276veC

“When buildings are destroyed, you can rebuild buildings, it's expensive, it's painful, but when whole lands are lost to the sea, there's very little options left. And this is the stark reality of much of the Pacific Islands, including Fiji.” says Satyendra Prasad, Abt Global’s principal technical lead for climate and localization. The devastation Fiji is facing due to rising sea levels echoes what we’ve seen in the U.S. with Hurricane Helene. Just as Fiji is preparing to relocate entire villages, parts of the U.S. will likely need to do the same as extreme weather and flooding become more frequent. These shared challenges underscore the need for stronger climate resilience planning globally. To mitigate future disasters, both Fiji and the U.S. must accelerate investments in blue and green economies, protecting oceans and forests while creating sustainable livelihoods. Strengthening partnerships between governments, the private sector, and local communities will be essential in crafting long-term solutions for climate resilience. #ClimateAction #BluePacific #HurricanePreparedness #AbtGlobal
