Subsurface Utility Mapping #SUM #SIM Integrating a wide-array Ground Penetrating radar into our underground mapping program was a big commitment, but every time we use the system, it demonstrates the ROI. On this roadway investigation, the utility crossings are challenging to locate using traditional tools as the traffic lane closures require multiple set-ups and take-downs. In contrast, a quick few passes from the safety of our large mobile mapping vehicle means our team is safe and comfortable collecting vital information to validate the traditional locate efforts. When all the scans are stitched together, the roadway shows a concrete base with rebar reinforcements. The cut trenches for utility crossing show up clearly as the steel reinforcement was not replaced. Extracting the precise horizontal and vertical position of the underground systems is easily exported and incorporated into our final subsurface investigation. #CFTA2024 #utilitymapping #campus #gpr #utilitylocating #utility #undergroundutilities #underconstruction #facilitiesmanagement #highereducation #damageprevention #riskmanagement #campussafety #mobilemapping #mappingthefuture #digitaltwin #subsurface #subsurfacesolutions #surveying #survey #mapping #gis #environment #team

Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) tunnelling is a highly efficient and mechanised process for excavating tunnels in various geological conditions. The operation of a TBM is closely monitored and controlled from a central control room, where operators oversee the machine's performance in real time. The control room has advanced computer systems and displays that provide continuous data on critical parameters such as TBM alignment, thrust force, cutter head rotation speed, and earth pressure balance. Operators can make adjustments to ensure precise tunnel excavation. 🚧 Advancements in Highway Subgrade Compaction Quality 🚧 The study, "Roller-integrated compaction monitoring and assessment of high and low liquid limit silt subgrades using the Green spline interpolation algorithm," introduces a novel approach for ensuring optimal subgrade compaction in highway construction. Utilizing Roller-Integrated Compaction Monitoring (RICM) technology alongside the Green spline interpolation algorithm, this research enables precise, real-time quality assessments across vast areas—minimizing human error and ensuring long-term structural integrity. 🔗https://lnkd.in/emJGCjw3 #CivilEngineering #HighwayConstruction #Innovation #CompactionQuality #SustainableInfrastructure

Attention #geotechnicalengineers, #bridgeengineers and #marineengineers: #Ship impacts can apply massive loads on #bridge piers. In this example, I took a typical 100k vessel impact load, applied 30 ft above the cap initially, and progressively increased the load to 20000 k, which is likely close but perhaps smaller than the load that the Francis Scott bridge experienced. This is an imaginary bridge pier with 12 - 90 inch diameter piles. At the 100k typical #ASCE7-22 impact load the pier displaces about 0.5 inches. At 20000k the displacements increase to 29 inches and the piles fail structurally. The analysis was performed with our #DeepFND #deepfoundation software and included water flow loads. This unfortunate event reminds us that the public should pay more attention to our #infrastructure before it collapses. Follow Deep Excavation LLC for more.

𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘀 Tunnel boring machine, from which the abbreviation TBM, is a machine that allows the complete mechanisation of the excavation of the #tunnels and the realisation of the coating. The #machine moves like an earthworm: hydraulic jacks point to the rock (if sufficiently healthy, otherwise on the newly positioned coating) and push the shield forward; the back of the TBM is also anchored to the mouth of the tunnel to contribute to the thrust. Once the head is repositioned, the rest of the machine is dragged forward. #structuralengineering #structure #Technology #engineering For more: 📌 Follow #ImpressiveEngineering 📌 Click on the 🔔and select “All”

When you’ve got a massive tunnel to dig, it takes a lot more than simply picking up the nearest shovel. You want to get your hands on a powerful tunnel boring machine (TBM). These mechanical behemoths are designed to cut their way through dirt and solid rock in preparation for the construction of some of the world’s largest tunnels. These are the five largest TBMs currently in use: https://lnkd.in/grE_ZEK7 #Tunneling #TunnelBoringMachines #TunnelBoring
