What an exciting day for all soil scientists. The United Nations General Assembly by the resolution A/RES/68/232 established 5 December as World Soil Day (WSD). The World Soil Day (WSD) is held annually to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. The basic components of soil are minerals, organic matter, water and air, other components includes living organisms (macro and micro); they interact and influence one another, creating a complex and dynamic ecosystem. Soil provides a host of crucial services for both people and the planet. Soil puts food on our plates, purifies our water, protects us against flooding and combats drought. It's also key to tackling climate change as it captures, sequesters and stores enormous amounts of carbon. There is no food security without healthy soils. Soil is a vibrant ecosystem, hosting a diverse array of micro-organisms that fix nitrogen and decompose organic matter, and armies of microscopic animals as well as earthworms and termites. Soil acts as a water filter, nutrient giver, and habitat for billions of organisms that make up a diverse ecosystem. The theme for World Soil Day 2024 “Caring for soils: measure, monitor, manage.” Proper soil management is vital since it takes hundreds to thousands of years to produce centimeters of topsoil. The question is How can we protect soil?Conservative practices such as:Residue management, crop rotations, cover crops, adopting a soil health management system, contour farming, stripcropping, windbreaks are encouraged. These practices can help reduce soil erosion, improves soil health, and promotes sustainable agriculture.Happy world soil day! #Conserve soil! #Preserve life! #Soil matters, take care of it! #Nourish soil! #FAO #World Soil Day
