Based in North Carolina, our hearts are heavy with the unprecedented destruction faced by our western counties due to Hurricane Helene. Despite the valiant efforts of first responders, the National Guard, utility teams, and relief personnel, many of the most affected areas remain inaccessible, lacking essential supplies such as gas, food, water, electricity, and phone service. The devastation has also spread across Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida causing immense damage. Although our facilities were not damaged, it's likely we all know someone—colleagues, friends, relatives, neighbors or clients—who has been affected. In times of such calamity and distress, deciding how best to help can be challenging. However, by coming together in support we can create a positive impact. The impact extends beyond our state borders, affecting communities in Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida with significant damage. Although our facilities were not damaged, many of us have colleagues, friends, relatives, neighbors, and clients who have suffered losses. Confronted with such immense hardship and loss, it can be challenging to identify how best to offer support. However, by coming together in solidarity we can create positive change. Hurricane Helene is one of the deadliest storms to ever hit the United States, leaving behind hundreds of miles of catastrophic damage and changing lives forever. The American Red Cross has launched a massive response to ensure no one faces this challenging time alone. Across the Southeast, hundreds of people are still missing, and damaged roads and bridges have cut off entire communities, making it difficult to get help to those areas. People need water, food, medicine and medical care. Tens of thousands of homes have been affected and some 1.3 million customers — about 4 million people — are still without power. People affected by Hurricane Helene need urgent help now. The images over the last few weeks from Hurricane Helene and the devastating impacts the storm has had on the communities of Western North Carolina, and the nearby states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia have demonstrated the critical need for communities to support each other in times of crisis. As members of the transportation community, we regularly rise to the occasion when crises occur to our people or to the infrastructure that we maintain so people can go about their daily lives. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, our MCA community has shown incredible resilience. We are immensely grateful for the continuous efforts of first responders, emergency management officials, utility workers, and volunteers tirelessly supporting recovery efforts.
