Today, July 15, the #BidenCancerMoonshot in coordination with the US Department of State and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will host a White House Africa Cancer Care Forum convening senior health leadership from 10 African nations. The American Cancer Society and its global team, lead by Anu Agrawal, are excited to see an ever increasing focus on #cancercontrol in #Africa. May this be the beginning of bigger investments in building #resilienthealthsystems that can effectively address the growing cancer burden on the continent, including the integration of #patientnavigation and #patientcenterededucation into cancer care delivery. And of course building stronger cancer #CSOs to lead national and regional #advocacy efforts and provide #patientsupport services in #communities. These are all important priorities for the capacity development team I lead so this forum can't come a moment too soon! Tune in at 1pm EDT today: ▶️ https://lnkd.in/eBJgK6q3 #WhiteHouseAfricaCancerCareForum #GlobalCancerMoonshot

Panel debate - take home messages: 👉rehab & health promotion should be seen as a part of treatment - we need to change the narrative about “offering” these services 👉services should be citizen centered - and driven by motivation and planned in partnership between HCP and citizen 👉don’t discuss who should do it - start process up where the patient is 👉early start will give more bang for the buck 👉inequality in health is best addressed by stratifying and help patients who cannot make changes by themselves - and offer help to self management to more resource full patients. Need to screen to stratify?? 👉health promotion needs should be integrated in needs assessment Thanks to Ellen Trane Norby Niels Sandø Mette Lolk Hanak Peter Sørensen Pia Therkildsen Charlotte Hammer for a lively and inspiring debate Thanks to DCCC - Danish Comprehensive Cancer Center for the grant making this day possible Danish Cancer Institute Kræftens Bekæmpelse (Danish Cancer Society) Danish Research Center for Equality in Cancer (COMPAS)

Cancer care poses unique challenges in Asia & the Global South HE Dr Wahid Ali Said Al Kharusi presented a comprehensive overview on the unique challenges faced by Asia in tackling cancer care. Today, in the post pandemic era, countries in Asia are forced to fight a tougher fight against cancer, with challenges such as rebuilding networks, addressing backlogs, driving policy change and adapting to the digitalisation of more and more health services. To overcome these challenges is an uphill battle; one that cannot be undertaken alone. Thus, partnerships between non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations and the government should be the way forward. Dr Wahid highlighted that these parties should look into empowering patients to advocate for themselves, engaging with on-the-ground community members and educating the right people, i.e, decision makers in order to be better equipped to face the challenges of cancer care in Asia. A collaborative research study was conducted with the Cancer Alliance (South Africa), the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), Global Health Unit, Institute of Cancer Policy, King's College London and Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care, School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand. The study explored whether a dedicated National Cancer Act in South Africa will provide the necessary long-term national goal setting and accountability framework to link with other legal and human rights mechanisms, to ensure equitable population-based cancer healthcare services and appropriate patient protection. The purpose of the policy brief is to share considerations for a National Cancer Act in South Africa and guide decision-makers and stakeholders on requirements for goal setting, funding, and accountability mechanisms. These outcomes are crucial to ensuring equitable access to comprehensive population-based cancer care for all in South Africa, particularly as South Africa is facing a growing cancer burden. Patient advocates and women’s rights leaders from around the world met in Brussels in May 2024, to share strategies to tackle declining screening rates and achieve the goal of eliminating cervical cancer. Thank you Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Blog and especially Matejka Rebolj and Jane Rigney for summarizing the outcomes of the meeting where I was also invited as a guest speaker. "Many countries have by now committed to implementing strategies to eradicate cervical cancer. A world without this devastating disease may indeed be within reach with the right political and societal commitment, and patient advocacy groups are crucial in achieving this historic goal. The time to act is now!" We can end cervical cancer if we, healthcare professionals, scientists, policy and decision-makers, patient advocacy groups, local communities, put our heads together. #endcervicalcancer #prevention https://lnkd.in/eJKfWPKV
