Yesterday, the Oscars announced awards related to movies. This year's best movie was predictable, and I don't think it has dissatisfied many, unlike most years (Although I would have been equally happy with "Killers of the Flower Moon").The Oscars, as we know, aim to celebrate films that excel not only on quality but also promise longevity. However, predicting which films will stand the test of time is challenging, and the Oscar jury has often failed. There is a long list of movies or directors that can attest to this. The question arises as to why this is the case. It's not that there's a deliberate intention to make poor choices. When reviewing the selections, they often appear to be safe choices that few would dispute, and likely, others would have made the same selections. For instance, choosing a Spielberg movie is generally a safe bet, not to suggest that Spielberg movies are in any way inferior. An interesting anecdote highlights this challenge: Charlie Chaplin, the renowned silent movie star, once entered a look-alike contest as himself and didn't win. This illustrates the difficulty of recognizing true or enduring quality, a challenge not exclusive to the film industry but also present in finance, where managers aim to pick investments that will perform well over time. The attempt however most of the times is to not go wrong. The Cannes Film Festival, on the other hand, selects films that are currently appreciated and meet the standards of quality and longevity, suggesting that achieving lasting recognition may not be impossible. The Cannes approach indicates that focusing on technical aspects rather than attempting to predict future greatness may be a more effective strategy for identifying lasting value. It is important to understand that in most cases, the current analysis simply depends on what can be seen: the data, the information, and the knowledge that can be acquired today. However, it often ignores the insights that a few successful investors have. These insights go beyond the surface level, tapping into a deeper understanding of potential and quality that may not be immediately apparent. Such depth of analysis enables them to recognize value and promise in films and investments alike, often foreseeing their lasting impact and appeal. The right question, then, is: how to gain insights? #oscars2024 #behaviouralfinance #filmfestivals #cannes #investing

Very proud to be a #Judge at this year's #GlobalEntertainmentAwards for the third time. Just finished judging 35 entries (3 categories of excellence). Fun way to spend a cold Saturday afternoon. I think last year I did this from my suite in #Berlin during #Berlinale, but this year from the Green Chair in my living room. There were some excellent trailers, including for the upcoming #Dune2. There were several excellent international series trailers as well. Why are The Global Entertainment Awards important? Trailers are how we market just about all content from studio films to indies to video games to network seasons. The best ones tantalize but don't spoil the show an audience hasn't seen yet. That is key. In the trillion dollar #EntertainmentBiz, competing for audience is everything. While good content goes a long way, no one is going to see it if they don't know about it. #Teaaers, #Trailers, #Promos, is how creatives and distributors get the word out.

Having watched highlights from the Paris Olympics closing ceremonies, I couldn't help but consider the Tom Cruise - Warner Bros. strategic partnership. Is this about clinging to past glory rather than building a future? Cruise's return feels more like a calculated attempt to revive past hits than a bold step into new territory. Warner Bros. seems to lean on Cruise's star power instead of investing in fresh talent. Is this really about making great movies, or just playing it safe? In a nostalgic industry where revivals often trump novelty, this partnership might make financial sense. But does it push the boundaries of what Hollywood can achieve? Revivals and sequels statistically have a mixed track record at best. Shouldn't a studio like Warner Bros. aim higher than retreading old ground? What are your thoughts on this partnership? Is it a smart move or a missed opportunity? Share your insights. Remember, strategic partnerships like this require a methodical approach guided by experts who understand the delicate balance between risk and reward. The folks at Capital Growth Partners get this and apply themselves in a thoughtful, methodical way to their engagements and focus on results.

Excited to share my experience from the FastCompany Innovation Festival Day 1! 🚀 One standout moment was hearing Ryan Reynolds discuss his collaboration with Marvel's Kevin Feige on Deadpool 3. Feige's simple yet powerful advice to "make every scene great" resonated deeply with me. It got me thinking about the power of setting high expectations. Whether in filmmaking, business, or personal growth, we often rise to the level of expectations set for us. This principle doesn't just apply to Hollywood – it's relevant in every field. Key takeaways: - Challenge yourself and your team to excel in every aspect of your work. - Don't settle for "good enough" – aim for greatness in each task. - High expectations can fuel creativity and innovation. - How do you set and maintain high standards in your work? I'd love to hear your thoughts! P.S. I have a couple of extra tickets for the next two days of the festival. If you're in the area and interested in attending, drop me a message! #FastCompanyInnovationFestival #LeadershipLessons #HighExpectations #CreativeExcellence #SuccessCircles #PeerMomentum #ProfessionalDevelopment #InnovationMindset #ContinuousImprovement
