Are An online game is a video game that is either partially or primarily played through the Internet or any other computer network available.[1] Online games are ubiquitous on modern gaming platforms, including PCs, consoles and mobile devices, and span many genres, including first-person shooters, strategy games, and massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG).[2] In 2019, revenue in the online games segment reached $16.9 billion, with $4.2 billion generated by China and $3.5 billion in the United States.[3] Since the 2010s, a common trend among online games has been to operate them as games as a service, using monetization schemes such as loot boxes and battle passes as purchasable items atop freely-offered games.[4][5] Unlike purchased retail games, online games have the problem of not being permanently playable, as they require special servers in order to function.Debmalya Bhattacharjee

💡NewZoo revises down it forecast for the games industry revenue to $183.9B (-2%). Their predictions are based mainly on the fact that people play less & fewer games. Here are a few stats from the report: → 66 titles account for 80% of global playtime → 43 games captured 90% of new game revenue → Average playtime has dropped 26% since Q1 2021 → PC revenue is up → Mobile revenue is down 2.1% to $89.9B Thoughts? The top grossing mobile games of 2024! We analyse the highest revenue-generating mobile titles of the year (thanks AppMagic). Tencent Games' Honor of Kings ranked number one. In fact, Tencent has taken the top spot since 2017. Scopely's Monopoly Go takes second spot, Dream Games' Royal Match third, Tencent's PUBG Mobile fourth, and Roblox rounds out the top five. The mobile games market has generated $81.8 billion in gross revenue from the App Store and Google Play so far in 2024, up 4.9% year-over-year. Nexon's Dungeon & Fighter and FirstFun's Last War were two of this year's breakout hits, both generating over $1bn. Century Games' Whiteout Survival, DeNA's Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket and Infold Games' Love and Deepspace were also big hits this year. Dream Games took the match-3 crown in 2024, though King's Candy Crush Saga remains as lucrative as ever. Supercell's Brawl Stars is now its flagship game following a dramatic rise over the past year.
