[Trevor Paglen] 🔍 In 'Adversarially Evolved Hallucinations', Trevor Paglen pushes the boundaries of AI, showing how machines see the world. Using GAN models (Generative Adversarial Networks), the artist explores how AI misinterprets the world due to biases in its training data. Traditionally AI identifies objects literally but Trevor Paglen teaches machines to interpret images with the depth and complexity of human perception, blending art, philosophy, and culture. This challenges the idea that machines see like humans, inviting us to reflect on how memory, culture, and personal experience shape our vision. Can AI ever truly understand images like we do? - Artwork showcased in Digital sector of Paris Photo 2024 by LOUISE ALEXANDER / FELLOWSHIP | Sector curated by Nina Roehrs - Image: Gregoire Grange #AIArt #DigitalArt #Photography #TrevorPaglen #GenerativeArt #Art #Photography #Parisphotofair #Photography #BeyondPhotography

In a hilarious turn of events that would make even the most seasoned prankster proud, a real-life flamingo has infiltrated the AI category of this year's 1839 Color Photography Awards. The brains behind this fiasco? None other than photographer Miles Astray, who audaciously submitted his authentic flamingo photo into the AI competition. The judges couldn’t spot the difference between a real flamingo and a computer-generated one and awarded the bird third place and the People's Vote Award. When questioned about his motives, Astray said, “I wanted to show that nature can still beat the machine and that there is still merit in real work from real creatives" The competition organizers, while appreciating Astray's "powerful message," had no choice but to give the flamingo the boot to keep things fair for the other AI artists. But let's not miss the real takeaway here: even in the age of advanced AI, human creativity and the wonders of nature still have the power to astound, amuse, and make us question reality. Take a look at the photo, can you tell if it’s not AI?

Human against AI, again A photographer has won an AI competition for his non-AI image. How ironic is that? In his statement, a photographer explains, "...it occurred to me that I could twist this story inside down and upside out the way only a human could and would, by submitting a real photo into an AI competition." It's intriguing to see how definitions of what constitutes art have evolved since AI entered the scene. For example, in another case last year, a photographer won the top prize at a photo contest with an AI-generated image, while another photographer was disqualified after their submission was mistakenly deemed AI-generated. #AI #generativeAI #AIart

What happens when you feed an old photography series shot on 35mm film into an AI model, and find new and novel ways to extend it? This is what I did in my recent creative experiments with generative AI. I took an exhibition of Iceland I did in 2014 and extended in two main ways: 1. Gave a sense of motion to every photo (using image-to-video) 2. Created a series of "photos I never took" (using text-to-image). It raised a lot of questions around ethics of extraction, the value of photography and art in the AI era, and what it might mean for photography. One thing's for sure though, as generative AI images flood our feeds, we are slipping further and further into Plato's Cave You can read my full article (and see the video and image outputs) here: https://lnkd.in/gEDbb9bd #generativeAI #AI #film #35mm #photography

"Sundar Pichai" by Helynn Ospina https://lnkd.in/gm7bjJpZ Last year, I had the opportunity to photograph Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, during a time when AI was already making waves in nearly every industry, including photography. Now, one of those images has been published in TIME Magazine as part of their feature on the 100 Most Influential People in AI, making this moment even more significant. The article explores AI’s potential and the ethical responsibilities that come with it — a theme that resonates with me as I reflect on how AI is influencing my own work. Seeing my photo included in a conversation about technology’s future is a reminder of the fast-paced changes we’re living through.
