The full 11-minute live interview (in English) is available at this link: https://lnkd.in/ekG7b-8R In the interview I discuss the factors that led to the current situation and how Malaysia Airlines Group (MAG) was trying to address the decline in on-time performance (OTP). MAG reported an OTP of only 72% for 2023 and this year it continued to degrade. In July 2024 Malaysia Airlines had an international OTP at KLIA1 of only 57%, according to a recent Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) report. I also talk about how the recent capacity reductions should not significantly impact MAG’s long-term competitiveness or position in the market. At the end I answer a question about the role of the government. "There has to be some kind of understanding that the airline has be run commercially and without government intervention necessarily. But at the same time the government needs to take a bigger picture look at Malaysia Airlines as well as the overall ecosystem and the overall industry." "There have been some calls for a blue-ribbon commission to be formed. I would agree that will be a very positive step for the government to form this kind of independent commission to look at what has happened specifically at Malaysia Airlines so that it doesn’t happen again. And to look at the governance and the structure of the overall industry – the policies that are in place, including the regulatory environment which understandably came under fire with the MyAirline collapse last year. There needs to be a reset overall, there needs to be a relook to ensure the overall viability and the health of the Malaysian airline sector – not just Malaysia Airlines Group." Malaysia Airports signed a strategic collaboration via a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI). The aim is to advance the development and investors' attraction of Zone 3 and Zone 4 at Subang Airport. The development of these zones, designated for business aviation and aerospace segments under the Subang Airport Regeneration Plan (SARP) will include the creation of a new area dedicated to business aviation hangars, and the amplification of the aerospace ecosystem catering to aerospace manufacturers, assemblers, and component MRO operators. This collaboration is expected to create a robust ecosystem that fosters innovation, sustainability, and economic growth in the region. Let’s talk about aviation.. New redevelopment of Subang!! It’s gonna be interesting since SZB is complementing KUL to some extend. In business pov, these will be a good headache to companies since we need human resources which currently are depleting in Malaysia. So moving forward, industry should play a big role in venturing with the existing institutional to ensure that we are thriving in the future.
