One Sage said, "A teacher develops your personality, while a Guru dissolves your personality." A teacher imparts knowledge about the external world, while a Guru guides us in exploring our inner being to realize the Self. A teacher answers your questions, enriching your life with what you lack, while a Guru questions your answers, helping you transcend the mind and shedding what is unnecessary. This journey with a Guru leads to liberation from rebirth. One is tempted to ask the question, 'Where will I find a Guru?' The truth is, we will not find a Guru, for the Guru finds us. It is a rule of the universe: what we seek is also seeking us. Just as the thirsty seek water, water also seeks the thirsty. So it is with the Guru and the disciple. A Guru awaits the true seeker, and only the genuine seeker will find a true Guru. If the seeking of a Guru is born out of greed for power or wealth, we will never find a true Guru. Wisdom cannot be gifted, inherited, purchased, or stolen. Wisdom can only be realized. The Guru, in that sense, is an emperor, unselfishly having only the best interest of the disciple at heart, while expecting nothing in return. We will find a true Guru only when we have prepared ourselves. The Guru facilitates awakening, and only an awakened being can evolve, acquire wisdom, and achieve realization. India has been blessed with a continuous lineage of noble Gurus.
