Check out this excellent pod(car)cast from Bruno. CDP is a very ill-defined space as most products are actually solutions that extend your organization’s data capabilities and take action towards a specific business goal. Frequently, in Financial Services, Retail, and Telco, we see organizations start with customer acquisition use cases through multiple channels powered by a more accurate measure of Lifetime Customer Value (LTV). The modern approach uses as much of the detailed customer information as possible to build accurate ML models for assessing value in existing customers and predicting values in leads. In short, these days your first party data and AI matter. Some products suit external retail marketing campaigns, others focus on a retention, and some fall into the traditional Master Data Management operational store. It’s a mess of capabilities out there and most of them leave the data munging and entity resolution work to the buyer (which is at least 50% of the work by time on average). Suggestion on how to navigate this mess: 1. pick your 2-3 top goals (ie, customer acquisition in a digital channel, cross-sell across products or LoBs, reduce high-risk/fraudulent customers) 2. Get your first party data in the cloud with the best and easiest to use AI and Data Analytics tools 3. Implement and measure your business cases through A/B testing and decide what is successful, and what information assists are valuable to your efforts. 4. Figure out if you need to operationalize this in a purchased CDP offering and you’ll make a more informed choice. Likely you will find that working on entity resolution for customers or filling in critical data gaps are where you need to focus. Anti-patterns: -Buy into a complex solution from a large vendor right away before knowing where your data and AI strengths are -Take a top down approach that creates a never-ending Enterprise IT project that can never possibly meet everyone’s needs -Do nothing and let Fred keep building that sad Power BI report until he quits for a more progressive organization
