Many people in Odisha often think of ragi (mandia) as the only millet, despite the fact that there are eleven different types of millets available in India. This perception likely stems from cultural and historical reasons. Ragi has been a staple in the region for generations, deeply ingrained in the local diet and traditional farming practices. Its nutritional benefits and adaptability to the local climate have further cemented its prominence. However, it's essential to broaden this understanding and recognize the diverse array of millets, each offering unique health benefits and culinary possibilities, contributing to a more varied and nutritious diet. The eleven types of millets available in India are: 1. Ragi (Finger Millet- Mandia) 2. Jowar (Sorghum) 3. Bajra (Pearl Millet) 4. Foxtail Millet 5. Kodo Millet 6. Little Millet 7. Barnyard Millet 8. Proso Millet 9. Brown Top Millet 10. Fonio Millet 11. Amaranth Millet Each of these millets has its own unique advantages and can play a crucial role in promoting food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture. How can we better educate and promote the consumption of these diverse millets in our communities?

In the heart of Odisha’s tribal belt, the Odisha Millets Mission (OMM) is redefining sustainable agriculture and nutrition. Launched in 2016-17, OMM seeks to revive millet cultivation and consumption in tribal areas, addressing malnutrition, food security, and economic empowerment. Koraput district, under the leadership of IAS officer Keerthi Vasan, has become a shining example of OMM's success. Starting with seven blocks in 2016, the program now spans 12 blocks, benefiting over 25,000 farmers and transforming more than 10,000 hectares of land. Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) like Sabujima and Nari Pragati are driving local implementation, supported by robust infrastructure, including custom hiring centers and processing units. Key achievements include a tenfold increase in crop coverage, record-breaking ragi procurement, and the establishment of Millet Shakti tiffin centres, empowering SHGs as entrepreneurs. Innovations like Ragi threshers and pilot nutrition projects for vulnerable populations are enhancing both efficiency and community health. By connecting farmers to institutional buyers, ensuring fair MSP, and promoting value-added enterprises, OMM is more than an agricultural initiative—it’s a movement towards empowerment and sustainability. Koraput’s OMM journey is an inspiring model of inclusive growth and resilience, blending tradition with innovation for a better tomorrow. In rural India, farmers have had long struggles with unfair pricing and delayed payments due to their dependence on local mandis and middlemen. We at Arya.ag addressed this challenge by building a transformative partnership with Navi Umed FPC and Suguna Foods in Maharashtra. Our intervention enabled direct produce collection from farms, on-site quality assessment, and immediate payments—effectively eliminating intermediaries and their associated costs. The transformation has been remarkable: over 3,500 farmers now enjoy reduced transport costs and prompt payments, while Navi Umed FPC has significantly expanded its reach.
