Can We Make Salmon Handle Seawater Like Sharks?🦈 🐟 Atlantic salmon typically lose water in seawater and compensate by drinking and excreting salts. 🧂 In contrast, sharks effectively manage high salinity, retaining water through urea accumulation in their tissues. 🦈 In the FHF-funded project UREA, we are investigating the potential beneficial effects of urea in fish feed on salmon growth, quality, and health. Last week, the Nofima team evaluated slaughter-ready salmon. Lets support the farmers and operators, who had done an incredible job in 2013, 2014 and 2015, to get to have a national law, the 242 of 2016, that recognized the economic, social and industrial value of Hemp, after almost ten years we find ourselves having to do politics again, having to fight again against a political system that wants, especially in Italy, to keep the hemp industry still blocked and that is why the most absurd rules are invented. Rules that we must punctually demolish by demonstrating for the umpteenth time the goodness and potential of the Hemp sector. The rest of the world on Hemp goes on, and we in Italy are forced to waste precious time with ignorant and miserable politicians. But we don't stop and we will be able to get the hemp industry back to Italy. We are at work for this! The upcoming sector event organized by Cia-Agricoltori Italiani in Rome is set to bring together key stakeholders and experts to address the challenges facing the Italian hemp industry. Taking place on Wednesday, December 11, at 2:30 pm in the Giuseppe Avolio Auditorium, the event will focus on the threats posed by an unfair bill that could negatively impact the Made in Italy agro-industrial sector. Industry leaders like Aldo Alberto and Lorenza Romanese will share insights on the importance of safeguarding this rapidly growing sector, particularly driven by young farmers. The event will also feature speakers such as Iacopo Paolini, Gianpaolo Grassi, Giacomo Bulleri, Lorenzo Simonetti, and Miglio, providing valuable perspectives on the issue at hand. Moreover, voices from the Italian hemp community, including Giuseppe Croce, Mattia Cusani, Rachele Invernizzi, Marco Tosi, Sebastian Malagola, and Giovanna Brogna, will contribute to the discussions, underscoring the importance of supporting the industry's preservation and expansion. Culminating the event will be a closing address from Cristiano Fini, the national president of Cia-Agricoltori Italiani, shedding light on the collaborative efforts required to protect the Italian hemp industry. We are pleased to announce the publication of our scientific paper titled "Replacing Tobacco with Hemp in the Beqaa: A Financially Rewarding Opportunity for Farmers and the Government in Lebanon" in the journal "agriculture". This research was conducted under the guidance and co-authorship of Associate Professor Rony Khnayzer, Chairman of Liberal Arts at the Lebanese American University. I also extend our gratitude to Professor Joseph Gemayel, former Dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences at Saint Joseph University of Beirut, for his supervision of the work and to my mates at the Regie Admin. The study explores the potential of offering Lebanese tobacco farmers a more ethical and economically viable alternative. Our findings reveal that while tobacco farming currently generates USD 828 per dunam for farmers, it leads to a net loss of USD 317 per dunam to the economy, a deficit covered by the Regie. In contrast, hemp farming yields a net profit of USD 2,405 per dunam, resulting in an overall economic gain of USD 19.24 million in the Bekaa Valley region. This significant difference in profitability highlights hemp's potential as a more lucrative and sustainable alternative to tobacco.

This study aimed to undertake a mapping of agroecological interventions in Africa and qualitatively analyze their design, the stakeholders’ understandings of agroecology, and their impacts. Kickstarting the Landscape Analysis Exercise on Modern Biotechnology in Kenya! Prof. Olalekan Akinbo, Ag. Head #GenomeEditing Programme, African Union Development Agency-NEPAD, yesterday was honored to be hosted by the Government of Kenya to discuss the importance of the Landscape Analysis Exercise and the preparation ahead of the High Level Ministerial Conference. Prof. Akinbo met with Mr. David Ombalo, Assistant Director of the State Department of Agriculture, who represented the Cabinet Secretary. The meeting introduced Africa Harvest and Agritech as consultants for the Landscape Analysis Exercise and discussed preparations for the High-Level Ministerial Conference, slated for July 2025 in Kenya. This exercise marks a significant step towards harnessing modern biotechnology for Kenya's agricultural development and Africa at large . The Ethiopian Seed Partnership (ESP), Wageningen University & Research and the International Seed Federation have just launched a Call for Expression of Interest (EoI) for public-private partnerships (PPPs) in Ethiopia via the ESP. This call is open to a wide variety of crops and offers the possibility to establish PPPs following three different modalities depending on your company's interest and presence in Ethiopia. PPPs are designed to support international seed companies’ entry and/or growth in Ethiopia, regardless of their current presence or level of activity in the country. Through these partnerships, interested companies can enjoy support in various stages of business development, from variety testing and registration to jointly addressing sectoral challenges, enabling them to establish and expand their business in the Ethiopian market. Importantly, at the same time the PPPs contribute to the transformation of Ethiopia’s seed sector.
