#numberofthemonth 30 sorting plants for lightweight packaging (LWP) with a total capacity of 3.3 million t per year are currently in operation in Germany. This was the result of a comparative study on identification technologies for lightweight packaging on behalf of Forum Rezyklat. Background: The plants are equipped with technologies for shredding, classification, density separation, magnets and eddy current separators as well as sensor-supported separation technology. Innovative sorting technologies such as digital watermarks or image recognition in combination with AI could lead to a higher recycling quality and quantity of recyclates. According to the plant operators, there is great interest in retrofitting, but packaging manufacturers and recyclers have yet to make a clear commitment to support further development when it comes to investment decisions. #recycling #germany #recyclates #packaging #plasticsrecycling

As we explore these beautiful landscapes filled with history, a crazy question comes to mind: What would the Brothers Grimm have thought if they had known about our FREE4LIB project? 🤔 Instead of princesses 👸, princes 🤴, witches 🧙♀️, and treasures 💰, our story is about scientists 👩🔬👨🔬, used batteries 🔋, and valuable materials 💎. And who knows, maybe they would have found inspiration in this modern challenge of waste recovery for a new kind of story: one where innovation and sustainability are the true protagonists. 🧑🌿 All of this to tell you that this week, the entire FREE4LIB consortium is meeting at the facilities of our host Fraunhofer IWKS, to review the progress made within this project, coordinated by CARTIF.
