Description A water-reducing agent is an admixture that can reduce the mixing water requirement and increase the concrete strength without changing the workability and cement content, or it can save cement usage without affecting the workability and strength.   1) Electrostatic Repulsion Theory After the hydration of cement, the Van der Waals forces between ions and the different charges carried by the hydrated cement minerals and main cement minerals during hydration cause aggregation, leading to the formation of a flocculated structure in concrete. Most water-reducing agents are anionic surfactants. When added to concrete, the negative ions (-SO³⁻, -COO⁻) in the water-reducing agents are adsorbed onto the cement particles due to the positive charge of the Ca²⁺ ions in the cement minerals. This forms an ionic distribution of a diffuse double electric layer (Zeta potential) on the surface. 2) Steric Hindrance Effect In the cement paste containing water-reducing agents, the long organic molecular chains of the water-reducing agents exhibit various adsorption states on the surface of the cement particles. These different adsorption states are due to the different molecular chain structures of high-performance water-reducing agents, which directly affect the time-dependent change in the slump of the concrete containing these agents. Studies have shown that naphthalene-based and melamine-based water-reducing agents exhibit a rod-like chain adsorption state. 3) Lubrication Effect The polar hydrophilic groups of the water-reducing agents are directionally adsorbed onto the surface of the cement particles, primarily forming hydrogen bonds with water molecules.   II. Applications Of Water-Reducing Agents Cement Savings: Without changing the mix ratios of the various raw materials (except cement) or the strength of the concrete, the amount of cement can be reduced. By adding 0.2% to 0.5% of the mass of cement as a water-reducing agent, cement usage can be reduced by 15% to 30% or more. Increased Strength: Without changing the mix ratios of the various raw materials (except water) or the slump of the concrete, reducing the water content can significantly increase the strength of the concrete. The early strength and later strength of the concrete can be increased by more than 60% and 20%, respectively, compared to concrete without water-reducing agents. By reducing the water content, it is possible to cast high-strength concrete with a grade of C100.

There was no activity in the market this week be- cause of the Eid-al-Fitr holidays. But starting next week, the market is expected to pick up again and demand will gradu- ally increase towards May. Although stocks are at a good level at present, as it is the start of the season, stock levels are expected to fall and demand will increase in May. Middle East-origin HDPE film was assessed at $1,070- 1,080/t cfr, Middle East-origin HDPE blow moulding at $1,090- 1,100/t cfr and US-origin HDPE film at $1,060-1,070/t cfr. Middle East-origin LDPE was assessed at $1,150-1,160/t cfr. Middle East-origin LLDPE butene was assessed at $1,080- 1,090/t cfr this week, while US-origin LLDPE butene was assessed at $1,050-1,070/t cfr.

Global HDPE Market Faces Downturn in April 2024 Amid Oversupply Condition In initial half of April 2024, the global High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) market experienced a downturn due to oversupply conditions. European sentiment remained unaffected by higher April contracts for HDPE, as demand decreased after a three-month uptrend. Similarly Asian market also witnessed a moderate trend amid sufficient supplies. Many Middle Eastern producers lowered their April offers, considering the short working days due to the Ramdan and Eid ul-Fitr holiday, leading to reduced prices in Asia and Europe. The European HDPE prices declined by approximately 2% during H1 of April, mainly due to weak domestic demand. Manufacturers faced cost pressures from the sluggish market, making it difficult to adjust prices to cover production costs. Despite rising Ethylene costs, most suppliers reduced prices due to improved availability. HDPE prices decreased in April due to increased availability and a shift in the supply-demand balance favoring buyers. HDPE prices have been falling over the past two weeks and are now below Europe’s spot ranges.
