🔍 Navigating the Future of SEND in the UK: Expert Insights As a leader of 22 years in schools, I've witnessed firsthand the challenges and opportunities in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) within our current system. Let's dive into the key issues and potential solutions: Current Tensions: 1️⃣ Inconsistent support across regions 2️⃣ Funding pressures on local authorities 3️⃣ Reactive rather than proactive interventions 4️⃣ Shortage of specialist staff Next Steps for Improvement: ✅ Implement a national framework for consistent standards - for those who feel we have one, you are right but it HAS to be applied consistently if pupils are to get the support they deserve. ✅ Invest in early intervention (backed by EEF research) ✅ Enhance workforce development and capacity not just within ITT and ECF but through ring-fenced CPD entitlements ✅ Promote evidence-based practices ✅ Improve multi-agency collaboration across national boundaries (increasingly I have seen poor sharing between counties for young people with complex need) ✅ Empower families in decision-making processes ✅ Develop a sustainable long-term funding model 💡 Did you know? The DfE's 2022 SEND Review highlighted these issues, emphasizing the need for systemic change. 🔑 Key Takeaway: By addressing these challenges head-on, we can create a more inclusive, effective, and sustainable SEND system in the UK. 👥 What's your experience with SEND provision?
