In 2024, Moo Deng became an unwilling social media star when a zookeeper posted a video of her on Instagram, and her image has been inescapable ever since. Her likeness spread like wildfire when the internet seized upon its new “favorite animal.” We now see her in or on paintings, tapestries, sculptures, mass-produced shirts, hats, bumper stickers, and even SNL skits. But being everyone’s “favorite” doesn’t feel good when they’re using you. We’re not mind readers, but it doesn’t take ESP to know that fame, crowds, or T-shirts with her likeness are not Moo Deng’s top priorities. Pygmy hippos are reclusive and nocturnal. They spend most of their days in nature sleeping and hiding in rivers, waiting until nighttime to forage in their diverse and expansive habitat. Khao Kheow Open Zoo exposes Moo Deng to rowdy crowds, who shout and throw objects at her from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. when she should be sleeping. She has nowhere to hide and barely enough water to swim in. I’ve seen it before, but over the last year this well-equipped service animal restroom in the Missoula Airport represents one of the ways my work has changed me. That I would delight in a dog restroom outfitted with a fire hydrant will come as a surprise to some. It’s no secret that I’m not a dog person, which is a constant source of teasing for my dog-loving colleague Joshua P.. Over the last year, I’ve warmed a little toward dogs. The change happened through a collaboration with Braver Angels made possible by funding from the Fetzer Institute. We called it #BraverLens. And together with Braver Angels staff Mark Metzger and Elizabeth Doll, I trained several people to use photovoice to address political polarization. When Amy Hebert approached me with her project idea, I must admit that I was hesitant. She had gone through the photovoice training and proposed a project centered on dogs. After a few conversations, Amy opened my imagination to the potential of her idea. Amy’s project hinged on a brilliant question: What qualities do you see in your dog that you’d like to see in people? And her work continues to pay dividends. You can read about her project on the Interfaith Photovoice blog (link below). Amy brought together people from across the political divide. And together they engaged her community and beyond. This work opened up a new pathway for people to see one another differently, to bridge divides, and instigate change for the common good. Thanks to Amy, I was changed too. Even though I’m not ready for my own furry friend, I’m able to see the world through the lens of dog owners. Seventy-five years ago, the recognition of animals—except perhaps the family dog—as individuals with thoughts and feelings was still in the future. Today, we know that animals of all species are complex, sentient beings who communicate in dialects (crows in the south of France can’t understand what crows in the north of the country are talking about), care for their families, have varied interests, have jaw-dropping navigational talents, are able to construct homes with their beaks or their claws, can figure things out and are emotional beings like us. We are bombarded with new insights: Recently there’s been news that orangutans, like many birds, seek out specific plants to use as medicine, crushing the leaves and creating a poultice to treat a wound. Crows devise elaborate tools to gather food. Dolphins use distinct whistles to call each other by name. Elephant families respectfully mourn their lost loved ones. Yet old mindsets are frustratingly slow to evolve. Many researchers today use state-of-the-art methodologies that can include organs-on-chips and fantastic high-speed computer simulators. People who still experiment on animals choose not to act on the continual flow of findings showing that animals can feel pain, fear and dread and wish for freedom from a laboratory cage. Some people still view animals as “others,” here to exploit in old ways, such as being force-fed to produce foie gras, shot to become a wall-mounted trophy or turned into trinkets for their amusement or pleasure. Every animal at the Seattle Aquarium receives enrichment. Enrichment refers to experiences that offer opportunities for animals to satisfy their behavioral needs, optimize their level of mental stimulation and create a rich, variable environment. Enrichment can fall into many categories, including: • Sensory experiences, such as floating objects with differing textures. • Food, such as task-oriented devices (like puzzles with a favorite morsel inside)! • Habitat, such as changes that add complexity to the surroundings. • Environmental enrichment devices, such as toys that the animal can manipulate. • And more! But are all dogs equally dependent on us? Since their domestication, dogs have been subjected to more recent events of evolution. As a result, there are many dog breeds that are renowned for their cooperative working habits, while many breeds are expected to work on their own without continuous cueing by their handler. Research from Eötvös Loránd University compared the various working dog breeds’ tendencies to gaze at the nearby human when they could not get to a reward locked in a transparent container. Although the breed types did not differ in their persistence, cooperative dog breeds looked at their human partner and alternated their gaze between the human and the target more often than the independent breeds did. Young bison are often referred to as “red dogs” because when they’re born, their fur is orange and red in color. After a few months, the hair changes to a dark brown and they get the characteristic shoulder hump and horns. You’re on your way baby bison! Rock onwards and upwards!⁣ As cute and fuzzy as they are, remember to give wildlife room and to use a zoom. Always maintain a distance of at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves, and at least 25 yards (23 m) away from all other animals, including bison and elk.
