This article presents data on the goals, objectives and preliminary results of two projects for the conservation and promotion of the Central Asian tortoise Agrionemys horsfieldii in Kazakhstan, which are being implemented by the private conservation foundation “Tasbaka” in 2024-2025. The landscape of the 𝗪𝗮𝗱𝗶 𝗥𝘂𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻 is iconic for its: • Isolated steep sandstone outcrops, each with its unique shape and character. Physical erosion by wind and water has worn away the softer rocks, leaving behind the more resistant formations that dot the landscape. • Remarkable red coloration, caused by iron oxide in the rocks, giving a cinematic feeling of Mars on Earth. Both conditions can be found in other parts of the world, that were once the seabeds, accumulating sedimentary deposits, and later experiencing intense erosion as the land was uplifted. Just a few examples from regions of this genesis, which are often featured thanks to The Royal Film Commission - Jordan, Utah Film Commission, Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission, Screen Australia. South America is the only continent without red deserts, as they result from the erosion of the Caledonian orogeny, which is absent there.
