These devices work by stimulating the retinal cells or the visual cortex directly, depending on the type of bionic eye. 👁️Current Research and Development: 🔺Improving Resolution: Efforts are ongoing to increase the number of electrodes to improve the resolution of the perceived image. 🔺Longevity and Durability: Research focuses on making the implants more durable and able to function effectively for many years. 🔺Minimizing Invasiveness: Developing less invasive methods of implantation to reduce surgical risks and improve recovery times. 👁️Types of Bionic Eye Electrodes 1. Retinal Implants: 🔺Epiretinal Implants: These are placed on the surface of the retina. They stimulate the retinal ganglion cells directly. 🔺Subretinal Implants: These are placed beneath the retina, specifically targeting the photoreceptor layer. 2. Cortical Implants: These are implanted directly into the visual cortex of the brain. They bypass the eyes entirely and directly stimulate the brain regions responsible for vision. 3. Suprachoroidal Implants:Positioned in the suprachoroidal space, which is between the sclera and the choroid.
