After a rainy and muddy week today both of our crews boring on this project finished the week off strong. One with a successful pilot shot and the other finishing a 42” casing installation. On this project we are using a combination of both pilot tubes with our Akkerman Guided Boring (GBM) Pilot Tube Systems - Versatility for Accurate and Extended Drives system and PLG Technologies casing compasses to ensure accuracy due to very tight specified casing sized that allow very limited carrier pipe adjustment inside of our casing. This project also has very different ground conditions spread over the length of the project. Some areas are known for large rocks and cobbles making a pilot difficult or infeasible. These areas are where the casing compass really shines as we can keep on grade with a steering head and have constant feedback on casing response, it has also helped us indenify when we are pushing a rock when we see steering resonpose go away in combination with higher thrust pressures allowing us to stop and resolve the issues faster before they cause a major grade deviation. Other areas have better soils and long drives (250’ to 320’) that allow for pilot tube methods to keep these tight casings on line and grade. Technology as been key to keeping this job on track in very inconsistent ground. We are proud to have great manufacturers who support this industry to help make these jobs a success.
