Taking Control: Treating CVI: While CVI-induced skin changes may be irreversible, managing the condition is pivotal to stall its progression and avert ulcers. Addressing underlying venous reflux stands as a cornerstone in managing CVI, potentially ameliorating skin symptoms. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that permanent skin discoloration may persist despite successful reflux treatment. Treating Venous Leg Ulcers: For those grappling with venous leg ulcers, a comprehensive approach is imperative, including: * Correcting Underlying Venous Reflux: Targeting the root cause is paramount, with treatment methods tailored to individual cases. * Collaborating with Wound Care Specialists: Expertise from wound care clinics expedites healing through specialized treatments. * Embracing Compression Therapy: Compression garments aid in optimizing blood circulation and fostering healing, serving as a linchpin in venous ulcer management. Chronic venous insufficiency demands attention, education, and meticulous management. Armed with understanding and proper strategies, we can navigate its complexities, avert complications, and nurture healing. Together, let's embark on a journey towards healthier, happier legs! Lower limb venous insufficiency is a common condition. About 50-55% of women show some signs of venous disease and about 20 to 25% of women will show visible #varicoseveins. Patients usually seek care because of cosmetic consequences of venous insufficiency, especially the varicose veins. The other signs can be itching, pain, aching, lower leg heaviness, muscle cramps, ankle swelling, discoloration, lipodermatosclerosis, and ulcerations. This middle aged lady presented with these signs and symptoms and had already had venous stripping done with little or no relief. We managed her through radiofrequecy ablation. One month later, her wounds have healed and the pain and itching is gone! 💪🏽 Quality of life has improved drastically. So glad to have impacted her journey positively! We currently have radiofrequency and microwave ablation readily available for treatment of varicose veins and venous insufficiency. #minimallyinvasive #varicoseveins #venousablation #interventionalradiology #IRinKenya With Muhammad Bashaeb

The Essential Role of Collagen in Wound Healing 🩹✨ Collagen, a key protein in the extracellular matrix, is vital for the structure and strength of our skin, joints, and bones. Its role in wound healing is equally crucial, influencing every stage of the process. Here’s how collagen supports healing: 📌 Early Stages: Fibroblasts produce Collagen III, which is initially laid down in the wound to provide a temporary framework. 📌 Later Stages: Collagen I, the dominant form in healthy skin, gradually replaces Collagen III to strengthen the repaired tissue. 📌 Long-Term Remodeling: Over months, collagen reorganizes, increasing the tensile strength of healed skin to 80–85% of its original strength if the healing process is uninterrupted. Collagen also attracts essential cells like fibroblasts and keratinocytes to the wound, supporting critical processes such as: ➡️ Debridement: Clearing out dead tissue. ➡️ Angiogenesis: Forming new blood vessels. ➡️ Re-epithelialization: Restoring the skin’s surface. Understanding collagen’s complex roles can help clinicians optimize wound care strategies for better outcomes. #ewiFacts - IPC as a safe treatment method for patients with constricted lungs and #pleuraleffusion 🔝 In 2018, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Sugery (EACTS) published the results of a comprehensive review of the scientific literature. The aim was to draw up an expert statement on the management of malignant pleural effusion. The statement of the expert group concludes that talc pleurodesis and subcutaneous tunneled indwelling pleural catheters (IPC) are the best methods to effectively treat the symptoms of MPE (malignant pleural effusion). In patients with constricted lungs, IPC appears to be the best treatment solution, although more high-quality studies in this area would be desirable. Conclusion: IPC is a safe method for treating the symptoms of malignant pleural effusion. ✅ 📑 Read the study here: https://lnkd.in/ezqguNxb 💡 Find out more about the IPC here: https://lnkd.in/e_bjsGq2 #ewimed #ewimedswitzerland #medicaltechnology #pleuraleffusion #catheter #drainage #pleurx #catheter

Skin grafts are a medical procedure used to treat extensive wounds, burns, or areas of significant tissue loss by transplanting healthy skin to the damaged area. Here's how they aid in wound healing: 1. Covering the Wound: Skin grafts provide immediate physical coverage to exposed tissues, protecting the wound from external contaminants and reducing the risk of infection. 2. Promoting Tissue Regeneration: The graft serves as a scaffold, encouraging the surrounding tissues to regenerate and integrate with the transplanted skin. 3. Restoring Functionality: By replacing damaged skin, grafts help restore the protective barrier function of the skin, preventing water loss and maintaining electrolyte balance. 4. Improving Healing Speed: By providing a new layer of skin, grafts expedite the healing process compared to the body's natural ability to close large wounds on its own. 5. Minimizing Scarring: Skin grafts can reduce the extent of scarring by closing the wound more effectively, improving both aesthetic and functional outcomes. 6. Pain Reduction: By protecting nerve endings in the exposed tissue, skin grafts can decrease pain and discomfort associated with large or deep wounds. #SNFWoundcare #WoundCare #SkinGrafts

Debunking Myths About Wound Healing: A General Surgeon’s Perspective As a general surgeon, I often encounter misconceptions about wound care that can delay healing and even lead to complications. It’s time to set the record straight and promote evidence-based practices. 💡 Myth: "Let a wound breathe; it heals faster uncovered." ✅ Fact: Wounds heal faster in a moist environment, which promotes cell migration and reduces scab formation. Covering a wound also protects it from infections and contaminants. 💊 Myth: "Antibiotics are always necessary for wound healing." ✅ Fact: Not all wounds require antibiotics! Overuse can lead to resistance. Antibiotics are only needed for infected wounds, and this should be assessed by a healthcare professional. 🚿 Myth: "Wounds shouldn’t get wet; avoid washing them." ✅ Fact: Keeping wounds clean and gently washing them with water or saline prevents infection. However, prolonged soaking should be avoided. By addressing these common myths, we can empower patients to take better care of their wounds, avoid complications, and promote faster healing. Let’s continue to educate and advocate for proper wound care—because small changes in understanding can lead to better health outcomes. What are some myths you’ve encountered in your practice or daily life? Let’s discuss! #WoundCare #GeneralSurgery #PatientEducation #HealthAwareness

This patient had a large cluster of varicose veins on his leg that were causing discomfort and annoyance. 😔 He came to us here at Milford Vascular Institute for help. When he learned that varicose veins could eventually lead to blood clots if left untreated, he put his trust in our vascular specialists to treat him. We performed a minimally-invasive, in-office radio frequency ablation to close off the deeper vein, which was the root of his problem. This helped restore healthy blood flow through the leg, prevented the varicose veins from worsening, and reduced the risk of developing additional varicose veins. 💉 After the radio frequency ablation, the bulging varicose veins needed to be physically removed to prevent blood from pooling inside them. This was achieved through a procedure called an ambulatory phlebectomy where the bulging veins are physically removed through tiny pinhole incisions that leave no scars. ✨ After these treatments, the patient is now enjoying smooth and healthy legs again, free from varicose veins. 🙌 Varicose veins will only get worse with time ⏳. If you’re starting to notice them developing on your legs, it’s highly recommended to have them treated as soon as possible to reduce the risk of further dangerous complications.
