Had a great and broad ranging discussion around the State of the Nation at this year’s BioCap Conference with James FRY (@Mills & Reeve), Benjamin Storey (@Barclays Eagle Labs), Samantha Perona (Westgate) (@Spotlight Pathology) and Lizzie Wills (GK Strategy). We touched on the strong historic and institutional advantages the UK enjoys in Life Sciences and the challenges along the road to reaching ‘superpower’ status with respect to technology and science, not least the hurdle of embedding innovation in healthcare. The discussion also elaborated on some of the main challenges and opportunities for businesses in the sector, including those associated with the current funding environment, geopolitics and regulatory barriers/changes. Here the panel provided some great insights into strategies for becoming investment and business ready. We ended by turning the spotlight on key needs from the new government to ensure that opportunities from the UKs strong knowledge base are optimally exploited. Labour’s plan for the Life Sciences sector, ‘A Prescription for Growth’, has been well received and recognises (amongst other factors) the need to address the entire financing continuum and deliver stage appropriate capital to the UK landscape. It’s the lack of access to such funding that invariably leads to the knock-on problems associated with talent, speed and delivery. Thanks to the organisers, @Bionow. Meet Bibiana Rius, our Senior Scientist I, who joined Elsie just over a year and half ago. Driven by her deep desire to advance the treatment discovery for complex diseases, Bibiana found a perfect match in our values, a synergy we’re thrilled about. In her daily work, Bibiana delves into the complexities of the central nervous system (CNS), a challenging yet fascinating sector. Her primary focus? Developing innovative cell-based assays, pivotal for propelling our in vivo research forward. When discussing the biotech areas she’s most passionate about, Bibiana shares, “I’m most enthusiastic about translational medicine, where my goal is to build a bridge connecting effective in vitro assays that predict outcomes to the more complex in vivo studies.
