What happens when a gravitational wave meets a black hole? Gravitational waves are the last signatures that are emitted by merging black holes. What happens when these two phenomena meet in space? Key Takeaways When black holes merge, the energetic signals that they generate primarily take the form of gravitational waves, or ripples in the fabric of space itself. Although these waves propagate at the speed of light, they’re compelled to propagate through space itself, which contains a huge variety of massive objects, including black holes themselves.
