StoreDot Revolutionizes Battery Technology with Prismatic XFC Silicon Cells In a significant milestone for electric vehicle (EV) technology, StoreDot has achieved a major breakthrough with the production of its first-ever prismatic XFC (extreme fast charging) silicon-dominant battery cells. These prismatic cells, characterized by their rectangular shape and stacked layers, have emerged as the preferred form factor for an increasing number of EV manufacturers. The adoption of prismatic cells offers numerous advantages, including enhanced mechanical protection and performance. Moreover, their flat surface facilitates seamless integration into electric vehicles, leading to improved #thermalmanagement and safety considerations. As a result, pack assembly costs and complexity are significantly reduced, paving the way for more efficient and cost-effective EV production. However, transitioning from traditional pouch cells to prismatic ones, and incorporating silicon-based chemistry with XFC capability, presents several engineering challenges and manufacturing complexities. StoreDot's solution revolves around meticulous design adjustments, including stack thickness, formation currents, pressure regimes, and effective management of swelling in silicon-dominant anode technology, all within a prismatic hard case enclosure. One of the most notable aspects of StoreDot's XFC technology is its adaptability to different cell form factors required by automakers. The company remains committed to further optimizing its design, aiming to achieve up to 170Ah of cell capacity and over 700 Wh/L volumetric energy density. This groundbreaking announcement follows StoreDot's earlier unveiling of the I-Beam XFC design concept, which extends extreme fast charging capabilities from the cell to the vehicle level. This innovative approach, known as cell-to-pack integration, promises to accelerate the integration of XFC technology into EVs, further enhancing their performance and usability. The scenario goes: in 2040 almost 45 percent of a total of 128 million passenger cars sold worldwide will be powered purely by battery electricity or fuel cells. (Study by German industry association VDMA and FEV Consulting) Efficient fuel cells, batteries, electric motors, and high-performance electronics as well as cooling technologies are the future growth drivers for the industry. This requires new manufacturing processes - and new tools. Scansonic is well prepared for this future.
